Title: Kids! (with aspergers)
Post by: STMO999 on 28 November 2009, 18:16:41
It's our anniversary today and our ten year old son told us we had to go for 'a romantical meal'. As far as I can gather, he got this from Horrid Henry.
We said it might be difficult to get a babysitter, but he said that would be no problem as he was coming with us :o
Earlier he asked what time we were leaving. 'About half six' I said. 'Oh no. i can't wait till half past six for my tea. Five o'clock I want it'.
'OK, five o'clock.'
We left the house at four fifty, got to the pub at five. Ordered the meal, scoffed it and were back in the house for ten to six.

Some rather 'romantical meal'. ;D ;D

I suspect the same would happen in our house too!
And, we can't even have a cuddle without 2 little cling-ons!!!

Autism, Aspergers, it's pretty much the same deal.

Those afflicted are very much "literal"....so once you tell them that X happens at Y time....it has to happen or it really does cause them anguish.

Not explaining that to you of course, just one particular individual that thinks they know it all and gets chopsy if they don't like what they hear.

My GP keeps telling me that I need to expand by at least half a stone to meet my minimum BMI, but I'm quite comfortable where I am to be honest.

Thanks for being concerned though.

It looks to me like you are trying to goad me a little, and if you are spoiling for a session then surely that makes you the neanderthal cavedweller that you have accused me of being in the past?

Funny where knowledge springs from isn't it!  :-?
Me thinks boundaries move to suit the arguement!!! ::) ::)

(BTW - My son has a diagnosis of high functioning autism and I have 16 years experience working with adult learning disabilities).

Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat?) has a brother:

Professor Simon Baron Cohen at Cambridge University

He has a theory that Aspergers is an example of 'extreme male brain'.

My take on it is that schools have become extremely feminine environments in which vast numbers of boys who would be perfectly happy making things are now treated as though they have a 'disorder' because they are not 'touchy feely'......

I think when we are talking about the Autism - Aspergers spectrum a little more thought should be made before commenting on what is / can be a disabling disorder to very varying degrees.

Seriously though, my little lad has aspergers and (as Im sure many of you on here will appreciate if you're in a similar boat) its not always a great deal of fun, especially when your trying to get the help they need at school etc.fighting for funding. Did a lot of research myself into it and Im much happier now that I understand his "condition" a bit more and try and appreciate how he views things as opposed to how the majority would view them. We liase with the school quite a bit and his new teacher and classroom asst. have done wonders for him this term.
