PC world are selling Netbooks with Windows 7 and 1gb of Ram. This is a disaster.
I have a Samsung N110 with XP and I gb of Ram which is brilliant.
Picked up another for a colleague same spec with Windows 7 - it runs at snail's pace. Just changed it to 2 gb and now arguing the toss about misrepresentation. PC world are preparing themselves I think for a load of returns/problems after Christmas - this is simply a joke and wrong of them - the Tech Guys at PC World know this is a mistake. XP is superb for Netbooks.

The only thing the "Tech" guys at PC World know are how to say "Would you like to supersize that meal for an extra 30p sir"

So is 7 if you give it the right amount of hardware to start with, but that's not down to the Dixon's group PLC......that's down to the manufacturers trying to shave off every last penny they can to make the price attractive to the punter.

i found Windows 7 is cracking on old hardware, got it on a box downstairs, its not much, 2.4 Ghz Celeron, 1.5Gb of ram.
Stolen Borrowed from work, it runs Win7 a treat.
But for personal use i still prefer my mac, but at work i would prefer windows!

Is a Mac actually of any use?
Can you do anything useful on it?
Mac clients for the database server we use are conspicuous by their absence.

The Mac is actually one of the best machines i have ever bought for Windows, it was the most stable for running XP than any other PC i have used.
Working from home using spaces is brilliant, 16 monitors in 1, i did used to use about 3 spaces for a load of RDPs to work machines.
I use mine for torrents, video editing, music, and connecting to the office.
The mac also never crashes, never hangs, never runs slow, its not been re-built in 2 years, it just works. I love the way at a click it shifts all windows into view, much better than crappy Aero, no doubt a windows machine can do everything a mac can and more, but for personal use at home its so nice to come home to after clunky windows

Only suitable for those who want to do the decent thing - wipe it and install Linux. ;D

I would have thought 1G would have been enough for Windows 7 only being used for modest requirements (ie, internet and email), which is all netbooks are built for anyway. Unless the graphics are stealing a load of that.
In a proper PC, I reckon 2G is nearer the mark.

been using win 7 with 1 GB.. using visual studio .net, visual studio 6.0 , sql server 2005 and many other stuff.. dont feel its sluggish or havent seen any problems..

I'd have to agree with those saying 1Gb is 'enough' (unlike Vista). Most Win7 Pros + Office 2007 Pro and the usual assortment of corporate bloatware tend to commit less than 1Gb memory.
Now, more advanced users - Photoshoppers, video editors, CAD etc will need more, but they sure as heck won't be using gay netbooks
