Title: poor dog..........
Post by: bluebuss on 11 December 2009, 21:45:05
while driving home last week at around 7.30pm, at about 50mph in the rain and traffic, out of nowhere appeared a dog sitting in the road.....the size of an adult golden retriv'....................and ..................bang, bloody big bang. sickened, i was truley gutted for the dog. i think the car in front had hit it and damaged the dogs back legs, ABS or not i had no time or space to do anything........apart from stop down the road. could'nt find a thing in the road and the traffic was thick.....at that speed i was suprised at the small amout of damge to the bumper, cracked plate, bent rubber strip and washer pump popped out, thank god there was nothing underneath near the bundles of pipes...........poor old yella'... :( :( :(

proabaly not what you want to hear right now .... but have you informed the police ??

If your car hits a dog or a farm animal, such as a sheep or cow, you are required by law to report the incident to the police. If you hit a cat or wild animal, there is no obligation to report it, but you must ensure that the animal is not injured and suffering.

I'd be gutted if i ran a dog over, even if it was daft enough to sit in the road.
Certain other creatures are fair roadkill game!

Many years ago, whilst riding a motorcyle; I hit and killed a very-young dog which was being hit with sticks by a group of kids brats.....the dog bolted across the road in fear of it`s tormentors, straight into the path of my front wheel....that lovely little thing died in my arms.
I have never forgotten that day and still cry at the thought of the innocent life I took...... :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Blubuss, you have my sincere sympathies.  :'(

Cats ...no road sense, when I was taxi driving some years ago a cat ran out into the road in front of me and I slammed on the brakes and the cat ran under a car parked on the left, I lifted of the brake and onto the accelerator and the cat ran out from under the parked car and straight under mine, I heard it go rattling along under the car, I looked through the rear view mirror only to see it run under another car going in the oposite direction. I don't think it's nine lives would last long.

Yes, it shakes you up a bit. I had a Jack Russell run out under the wheels of my vehicle when I was with Securicor. Poor little thing shuffled off it's mortal coil within seconds.
I looked up to see an elderly lady looking across from her front gate and instantly knew it was her dog. She seemed surprisingly ok about it, but there may have been a delayed shock, so we stayed until we had a neighbour with her.

Only had rabbits and birds

Bird flew through the front wheel on a bike - shredded. Pigeon flew into my chest on a bike, broke its neck and winded me. Worst was a rabbit who would not be avoided, everytime I swerved, it swerved back under my wheel, squished it at about 15mph - idiot.

Oh and bumper damage from one of those game birds ::) ::)

As to cats, a work mates GF collects them - except one which is WMs cat, that was partly ran over - needed a leg covered up for a few weeks - skin peeled down lile a glove :o :o :o. However as she is a vetinary nurse said cat is now OK

I've had a pheasant commit suicide by standing at the side of the road, watching me approach & then nonchalantly walk directly in front of me! Shattered the nearside of the bumper & dented the grill. the shockwave ran right through the car, sounded like a bloody bomb had gone off under the car! ;D

I once gave a dog a bloody nose in Ripley, because the owner's retracting lead didn't work. I was doing around 20mph, because i'd just pulled away from a junction. I offered to take the dog & owner to the vets, but he refused. Ran over a cat many years ago in the pitch black of no were, ran over it again for good measure (i hate to see owt suffer). Though i did run over a Grey Squirrel a few months ago & when i looked in the mirror it was having a fit in the road (ah shame, another one less). There would be plenty of OUR Red Squirrels if it wasn't for these bloody things >:(
