I find it hard to believe all those things went wrong at once :-/
Bit like the trucker we had on a motorway a few years back. He had the same problem (allegedly)

i watched it on the news think the blokes a total pratt myself, is there a reason why he couldnt drive along the hard shoulder and bang it into neutrel and switch the ignition off. ??

I seem to remember that Ford had problems with cruise control on the Explorer about 5 years ago.
(Actually, I haven't clue when it was - but it wasn't this year, so what I really mean is "5 plus or minus 4 years ago" - that should cover it.)

I just said the same to Mrs Albs as Richie said,all he had to do was select neutral.An attention seeker in all liklehood. ;)

Just watched it on Channel 5, seems he rang Ford 1st and they didnt seem interested. Bet that does well for sales.

What a prize plonker >:( Can't believe he couldn't shut it down, mind you he's only 22 (no experience) and probably panicked.

Glad he wasn't driving my Westfield when the throttle jammed wide open just as it was passing through 5K RPM in 2nd gear with traffic ahead. ::)
Press clutch / select "N", turn key to stop it bouncing off the limiter and steer to a halt by the side of the road.
I smell something, and it's not coming from his pants... :-X

Something similar happened to me years ago driving down the A1 near Catterick. I was taking the wife to Manchester in our Austin Allegro VDP Auto (I know, don't laugh too loud). The day before I had fitted a new exhaust and it had been a bit of a rush. Anyway, doing 65ish one second, then BANG, CLANK, the car took off like a bloody rocket, the rev counter went to the red stop and tried to fight its way off the clock face and the car was filled with the sound of loud screaming (the engine not us), I was rooted to the spot for what seemed like minutes but was really only a few seconds until I realised the traffic was starting to build up & there was a real danger of a nasty ending real soon! No sliproad or hard shoulder to take, just hedgerows, fences & deep ditches, so I stood on the brakes; not slowing down at all, stood on them harder, car began to judder so badly I nearly lost control of the wheel despite my hands being welded to it! Put it in neutral & the motor screamed so loud, my heart was in my mouth, I was expecting pistons, rods & bits of white hot block to come flying through the bulkhead LOL. I finally managed to stop it after about a mile or so but couldn,t shut it down by removing the key or the battery neg wire. I had to use my wire cutters to cut through the throttle cable!!! What had happened was, I had fitted the exhaust manifold clamp UPSIDE DOWN the day before, & this had come loose and allowed the frontpipe to drop onto the throttle cable which ran just below the joint! Buggered the head gasket, buggered my suit, and generally ruined the mood, but we lived to fight another day, and it was DEFINATELY a good lesson learned! ;D ;D ;D :y

You've just reminded me of a story my mate told me that is true. He's a Trucker & one day he called round at his mates haulage yard. Everyone was stood around this truck talking & so he joined them. Apparently just the day before one of the drivers had a similar problem. The engine just hit the red line & no matter what he did it just wouldn't stop. What had happened was that some how the diesel had leaked up in the oil & it got up to such a level that it just fed it self. There he was at the side of the road with this massive truck engine reving its nads off & belowing smoke out like hell was on fire. The Police closed the road off & the fire brigrade attended, but nothing could be done until the engine eventually let go & exploded metal, oil, diesel & whatever else all over

All scary, The only car I ever saw with the throttle stuck was a Triuph 2500, it was an ex car of one of our directoors at work and one of the salesman had bought it. Seems he had been under the bonnets cleaning and polishing.
Any ways he jumped out of the car in a complete panic as it was bouncing the valves at high revs and he just ran arround like a headless chicken. Some one walking past saw the commotion and just leaned inside the car and tuned off the ignition. One of the mechanics went over put a drop of oil on the throttle linkage, tried it a couple of times and then started the car. No issues at all after that.
As mentioned, it just shows how some motorists panic.

Yep, I have had this happen on High Road in Darlington, car was a 1963 Mini Woody, suddenly revving it's nuts off.... :D :D Turned off the ignitions and found the throttle return spring had come off, put it back on and no further problems. This was a proper car and you could simply turn it off.. ::) ::)

He then tried to take the car out of gear but it would not budge - and when he tried to pull out the key it would not turn in the ignition.

I mind once working on a sulzer 6lda (railway engine) that the turbo bearing went on engine wouldn't shut down injesting its own oil via turbo run for about 4 hours until it burnt 410L of oil :o
