Do I qualify for being extremely lucky?
Driving home from Grimsby today, 10mls from home battery light started to glow/pulse didn't come on fully, just glowed then went out then glowed a bit etc, quite hypnotic. Bu**er I thought, have the alternator bearings/regulator finally given up ( got all the parts, haven't got round to fitting them yet :-[ )
Got 2mls from home, still glowing, when EML came on :o within half a mile the abs,tc, and airbag light had all come on (engine still running) then I lost rev counter, speedo, fuel gauge, the computer was telling me that there was a problem with the autobox and my headlights and on top of that, there was no power steering :o :o :o :o
Managed to nurse the car home, every so often the dash returned to normal and the car was ok, then it would go again :'(
Parked the car on the drive and popped bonnet could hear a knocking noise placed hand on top of cam cover felt like it was coming from there, S**t better switch engine off.
Had another look and this is what I found :o

The Aux belt tensioner had disintergrated :o

Amazingly the belt had stayed on !! all became clear, the belt was not doing its job as it was loose (have checked belt, no signs of damage, new one on order)

Managed to get a new pulley from the local VX stealer £23 complete assembly was £58. Took 10 mins to put on :y

Doesn't look nice, does it.
Dash doesn't light up like a christmas tree anymore, will be keeping an eye on the pulley, just in case.
So my job for next day off will be sort out alternator bearings/regulator and fit new Aux drive belt, should be fun.
so, lucky or what ? :y

That doesn't look at all nice!
I'd make sure you're supplied with the correct length belt when you replace it. There were recently a spate of belts that were too tight, knackering the tensioner. A search on here will pull up the relevant threads. Make sure there's still some slack in the self-adjuster when it's fitted.

As far as I'm aware the belt and tensioner have never been replaced, no mention of them in the sevices I had done before I started doing the jobs my self. car has been fine since I got it 3yrs ago, so I am assuming it was a natural failure.

Yes it's my other car, a Locost, built from the ground up. I have a build diary at www.lumby.freeserve.co.uk

Doesn't the water pump run from the aux drive belt? I hope your car hasn't overheated from the belt being loose.

Yes, the aux belt does run the water pump and a very good point!

By the time I had got car home the temp was starting to creep up. When I drove onto the drive the power steering was back, it would seem the belt was intermitently driving the pulleys, I think that's why I got away with it

The Gods were certainly with you.... :)

Does anyone know the correct size of the aux belt for a 97 2.5 with A/C? Dealers lost my ordered one, but found me a replacement but had a different part number. Fitted OK, but old belt was so worn that i was unable to read the belt code. Just worried that it is 10mm too short and excessively straining the tensioner etc.
