Plenty of instructions on Google, and the X clamp kit is no more than £5.

The actual problem is the PCB bends ever so slightly when the box goes back together..and as the GPU is an SMD (Surface Mount Device)...the rest is obvious for those with even a passing interest in the basics of physics.
As you say, online "bodges" hold the problem at bay for a while (quite a while actually)...but the only real fix is to build the bastard properly to start with.

A revised airflow is certainly something MS need to address, but if the PCB wasn't under such strain to start with then I have no doubt the manufacturer soldered joints would hold a lot longer than what they do now.

Simply re-flowing wont do it......you need to remove, re-ball (or obtain new parts), clean PCB, dry out re-balled devices (to avoid popcorning), refit....hence why it does not get down.
Costs us around 100 quid a device to get a 1500 pin 0.8mm pitch BGA device re-worked

Our 360 was an original Nov 05 release (pre-order).
It failed with the RROD in Jan 09 (2 months after the "extended" warranty"), it's been running sweet since the modded X clamp was fitted so I've had my moneys worth as far as I'm concerned.
Besides, they are so cheap to buy now (and even more easily "spoken to" than before), so buying a new one at some point (if I actually have to) to keep the kids happy won't phase me much.

Happily,I have no idea what any of you are talking about. ;D...........got 3 of the contraptions here-one under the bed suffering from rrod,one a few months old working fine so far and another complete with guitar hero world tour (includes a guitar/drum kit and various other things) which hasnt even been taken out of the box yet and hopefully never will.

As DTM often says, we could be going down the mis-diagnosis route here. RROD needs to be clarified, it does not automatically mean over heating issues, is it all sections of the ring or just 1 or 2?
Also what code is being thrown up.....
I had 25% of RROD, due to the box crashing loading a COD4 server. I yanked the power cable out, since caused an E73 error which is network related. Couple of times a month on boot, it fails to boot and gives 25% RROD. I force it into an over heat, which sets it into 'safe' mode, and it boots fine and runs fine for a few weeks.
