Title: Recommend a washing machine
Post by: Martin_1962 on 29 December 2009, 15:51:51
We currently have a Dyson. About 7-8 years old. (Was a present) Living on borrowed time as some spares are NLA.

When the bearings go it will be scrap.

We need a large load one for duvets ect.

No idea what is actually any good.

So just asking for advice as the tumble drier thread has got peoples interest

We're perfectly happy with our domestic Bosch machine - it's nearly 12 years old.  Can get a single duvet in without a problem.  Can't see the point of paying an extra £400 just so you can fit a double in.  How often do you wash your duvets anyway?  Take the big ones to the cleaners or the laundrette.

Actually, now I come to think of it, I've no idea how the wife gets the double duvet clean.  Maybe she doesn't.  Maybe it's disgustingly filthy.  Maybe she takes it down to the river and bashes it on a stone.

Don't think I'll bother to ask - I don't really want to know the answer. :(

Depends what you want to spend.

Bottom end - Zanussi
Middle - AEG or ISE
Top end - Miele

Snap! My Bosch was about £500 12 yrs ago, only thing i have replaced is the water pump....about £20 iirc.....and it didnt die, it just became v. noisey.
And dont think coz i live alone, its not used much, usually 3-4 times a week its on.

And why put duvets in domestic washing machines?
A visit to the dry cleaners and ask for a machine wash  :y

Should add.....i do put a cleaning solution thro it about once every 6 months.....suppose to descale the heater and clean the scum out of the machine.
Probably does the machine good being run at 90C once in a while...
Or could be just a waste of a fiver every now and then  :-/

Can't understand why we don't have the American ones. The dryer is stacked on top of the washer and actually fully dries all your clothes.  :y

Interestingly, the 'experts' are currently rating this as just as good as the top end Miele (note, the quality varies with wedge spent);

http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/New%20Appliances/ISE%20Appliances/ISE1606W%20ISE10%20Washing%20Machine%2010%20Year%20Warranty.html

With the added bonus of superb aftercare support (Miele are a little bit hard to get bits for)

Do not buy an Ariston  :'(
We did biggest mistake ever, never stopped spending on it.
Went back to Hoover, they have been reliable for us. :y

The Dyson repair man recommended Hoover (blew the control board and warned us over NLA bearings), we have had a few long lasting Bosch appliances as well.

I love my Hotpoint. Not because its any good, or even reliable.  But as I cannot use it (too complicated), that means I don't have to touch it.

Ideal :y

Had posh Miele, AEG etc, found new AAA energy/water saving rating did not use enough water so left soap in clothes.

Bought cheapest Beko, is noisy and takes ages, but perfect wash and was 120GBP delivered-ok after 4 years of heavy use too.

Should add we got a very good deal from QED a few years back, and a free 10 year guarantee!

as ours is on that much it made real economic sense to spend just a little more, and relax for a decade  :y

Very happy with our Hotpoint machine. Previous one was Servis and we had nothing but trouble with it. Also didn't seem to get washing as clean as the Hotpoint. ( We had a Servis cooker a few years ago and had loads of problems with that too!)

Had an LG with gear rather than belt drive for nearly 10 years. It was completely trouble free until about a year ago when the bearings in the back of the drum disintegrated.I replaced them (a pig of a job)but now the same thing has happened again. :(

I'd happily buy another if it means I don't have to use it, as it has a control system that only women can decypher!

I have a Hoover washer/dryer, no issues till a while back, asked for some advice on the forum.  Was suggested I put it through a hot cycle (empty) as it sounded like a bearing was squealing but in only one direction.  Hot wash sorted it.

Very happy with it, just not sure I have it on the right wash program, and cant find the manual to check it.  had it a few years now, no real heavy duty use as I live alone, but is still used daily/ every other day depending on time of year.

No, I don't wash any clothes. Pink job I cant use the washing machine - too complicated.

And my overalls don't really get washed - kinda pointless....

I will eventually get a house and work out what a washing machine is, but take next year for example, French Alps in Jan, Italy or Canada in March, Isle of Man TT in June, Holland in July, Japan in September.....

I could not do all of that, if i had a house.

Mother & father tunnie are away a lot, during the week i get the house to myself, i don't see the point in moving on yet

Sorry Ljay, on this one I disagree...

...Spoilt Brat cannot apply to Tunnie re. his travels - on the basis he is funding them himself,by means of a job he applied for, and was given, on his technical merits....

If his folks were funding all that, I'd agree - but, when single, there's nothing wrong with playing hard when you work hard  :y
