Title: Sports achievement of the decade?
Post by: Banjax on 01 January 2010, 10:19:17
Radio 5 Live have been running "he Sports Achievement of the Decade" award for the last few weeks...the results are laughably myopic and self congratulatory

Winner: Sir Steve Redgrave? It's rowing - how difficult can it be? If I did nothing but row a boat for 30yrs I'm pretty sure I'd be in the top 100  ;)

Runner Up: England Rugby team win the World Cup? A game played seriously by about a dozen countries on the planet........hell even Scotland make the semis now and then.....hardly an achievement of the decade is it?

Runner Up: Roger Federer - luckily a large number of his amazing 15 Grand Slams were won at Wimbledon or no one here would have given a monkeys

Runner Up: Lance Armstrong - fair enough - 7 Tours in a row.

wheres Tiger Woods who dominated golf? ah - its Sports Achievement of the Decade as long as we abide by our sanctimonious principles.

wheres Valentino Rossi?

what about Joe Calzaghe - undefeated in the last decade?

Michael Phelps 8 gold medals?

Usain Bolt?

Happy New Year

I hate these best of the decade polls - they're always always wrong.............unlike me  :y

Well said Banjax!!

Lance Armstrong is fair enough and possibly should have won. 7 tours in a row is no mean feat. Same for Rossi - some will say its jus riding a motorbike quickly round a track, how hard can it be. After various attempts to ride a motorbike in the past I am going to say very!! ::) ::) ::)

Tip for the next decade: stop listening to Radio 5 Live.

Restrict yourself to Radio 4 and your own music collection.  Read only The Times, watch only BBC2 and Channel 4 and forswear strong liquor.

Happy New Decade. :)

I'm sure there are many women and children who have carried vast masses of water over many hundreds of miles in the decade past.  Kinda blows the whole physical achievements thing wide open!

OK, I will concede that The Thunderer is no longer put together quite so impeccably as in the days when it had the classified advertisements on the front.

But surely you don't want more people to read The Telegraph, do you?  And you can't be serious about The Independent.   And I, for one, not having a sociology degree, cannot understand anything in The Guardian

I suppose that one might, like my sister-in-law, restrict oneself to The Scotsman, but life would not be sustainable under those conditions.

My Sports acheivement of the decade has to be my Glasgow Rangers reaching a European Final!
Ok they lost but an amazing acheivement when you consider the state of Scottish football

Lance Armstrong is a Legend in my book, not only that he is a fantastic athlete who people will aim to be, but also an inspiration to over come trauma that life throws our way.
If you have not read his book get it  :y

For me Usain Bolt should take the Sporting Award for the Decade. Can't wait to see the lad perform again :y
I have laughed though because if he was about when Cool Runnings was made there would have only needed to have been Usain pushing the sledge ;D who would have propelled them to Gold  ;D ;D
