Take turns at sitting in the car. That's what we did for 7 hours last year.

If it's a potterton Profile I bet it's the fan failed
Or ecu failure. Gas valve failures on them tend to blow out trip

I'm on my 3rd fan, it has been the only problem in 18 years (I now keep a spare just in case)

Profile - the ones that dry out the caps on the pcb.  Better design that the newer superima that is just so poorly built, the pcb slowly destroys itself

The example next door has a failure mode where it runs the fan with the pilot valve open but no ignition - for hours on end. Very reassuring when you're in the middle of an LPG conversion in the next garage. ::)

Yes, if a profile there are 3 caps that dry out.....the result is a boiler that just keeps cycling, fan spins and the spark goes but the gas is not turned on.

A plumber will replace the PCB at a cost of 100+ quid, me, I replace the 3 capacitors at a cost of about 90p.......think I have done 4 in the close now

I assume they are electrolytics
Axial or Radial?
What value & voltage
I'll get some in anticipation

Cant recall the values but they are radial.

all around 22-100uf....go for highest temp rating you can.

Never had to replace a fan, I just strip them down, clean them up and soak the broze bearings in a parrafin/light oil mix for 24 hours and then get 5 years from them

forgot tomention that aswell, the gas valves do actually tend to stick, just give it a gentle tap with the hammer, works everytime. ;)

Hmm. Might pre-empt mine and give it a precautionary cap change come the summer. Probably about time it had a service. No evidence of it being touched for the 12 years the house has been here. :-[

Not just me then? My boiler's badged ideal classic? The pilot light is on & if you select hot water on the switch box in the kitchen you can hear the boiler fire up & away you go. Press heating, constant or timed & nothing...not a sausage even though the little red light comes on. I have a leccy fire downstairs so keep warm, but it's pricey to run.
Any ideas before i phone the plumber?

Perhaps a silly question but have you got the thermostat turned up........

It will either have a motorised valve that diverts flow round the radiators and switches on the pump and boiler, or the hot water will be gravity fed and the central heating will use a pump switched via the thermostat and programmer. So, depending on the configuration of the system, suspect either the pump or the motorised valve - assuming the thermostat and controller are OK, of course.

Post some more info. on what is in the airing cupboard and might be ble to suggest some diagnostic steps.

Yep motorised valve, weather its combi or systems boiler, but then again,it could be a couple more things besides that if its a combi. :-/

Programmer fault or stat fault.

If it was the 3 way valve, the boiler would still fire up when heating selected ;)

Depends on the type of system. Ours has microswitches in the valve(s) (2 separate ones instead of a 3 way) which fire up the boiler, so if the valve is stuck, nothing happens.

Ah right - is that to save putting in the bypass valve normally associated with zoned systems?

I think it's so that you can have independent control of heating and hot water, with the boiler only firing up when one or the other is calling for heat. It still has a bypass circuit as the boiler has a thermostat that causes the pump to run on if it shuts down while too hot.

Kevin is correct, its the microswitch in the valve that fires the boiler, not the stats or programmer.

The easy test is to turn the hot water on (ensure there is demand by winding the stat on the tank up) and then set the manual lever on the side of the motorised valve to allow flow to the heating system and check to see if the rads get warm
