They apparently enjoy curling on frozen lochs in Scotland. Being a townie/southerner, I wouldn't know about such activites... ;)
...but I know an amusing story when I read it:
Taken from a curling blog (H/T Bishop Hill):
"Apparently it was quite a day in Lochmaben. The ice had been checked by the local council and was 7-8 inches, and solid. However, someone phoned the police to say there were lots of people on the ice and they didn't think it was safe. Anne tells the story, "Six police officers arrived but they couldn't go on ice to warn people because of health and safety so they passed the buck to the Nith rescue who came with a rescue boat but because of heath and safety they couldn't go on ice either. So the Coast Guard arrived, lights flashing! But guess what? Because of health and safety he couldn't go on the ice either! A great day was had by all.""

Used to love watching it on TV. Was something my Mum used to do when she was growing up (She was from Aberdeen) dont see much of it these days.

Lochmaben is 7 miles from me,and that little story doesnt surprise me at all. Muppets :(

My Grandad loved the curling and had a number of stones specially made from Ailsa Craig granite :)
You'll be curling on the Thames again if this weather keeps up Nick :y

Used to call curling on Lochs a Bonspiel IIRC, when I was a member of a curling club near Inverness. Great fun I'm told, but we never had it quite cold enough in the 8 years I lived there, so Inverness ice rink sufficed, but still an ace sport. 8-)
