Title: which route next monday??
Post by: hotel21 on 06 January 2010, 20:52:57
Semi serious question time here....  I know optional part of the following routes is a tad too north of the wall for some of you but there are others who do considerable mileages on OOF who may possibly have an informed input.

Next Sunday night/very early hours Monday next week I have to deliver a car from Scotland to London and get the train back home again.  Garage I am delivering to is virtually at the bottom of the M11 in East(ish) London but...

.... Will it be M8/M6/M1/M25/M11, or A1/A1M/M11 or A68/A69/A1/A1M/M11.  The latter is the shorter route but its a pain in the crack as far as the A68/69 goes.  And the snow is a good multiplier at the moment, and so tending to the longer but straighter M8/M6 option!

thoughts, anyone?

A1 isn't a bad option now days... There aren't any roundabouts South of Scotch Corner (for certain) but there are some roadworks to contend with

Personally I'd go down the A1(M)/M11 or if you fancy a rest halfway down you could do M8/M6 Stop off at mine for a cuppa/bacon sarnie then carry on M6/A14/M11 ;) :y

Use as much of the M1 as you can, if there is still snow, then more lanes to move arround on, other than that, am clue less as each route could have it's own set of problems.

Do you know any one with a tomtom or similar with live updates for traffic you could borrow.

From Edinburgh, I would prolly go A1, M1 at earliest opportunity (rather than going to M18), M25, M11.

But I've only been to Edinburgh once, so don't listen to me ;D

I quite like the A1, especially when driving the now company cars.  Set the cruise at a couple below and catch the overtime sheckels as they mount up.  A68 is a switchback and an assortment of country roads.  Given the recent snowfall, would be very surprised if its any real good, even in a large Disco3 V6 diesel...

Really only the M6 or A1 coastal from Edinburgh thats running favourite at the moment..

does the M1 still have that huge 50mph limit section? If so, and its a late night run, i would do M40 instead of M1.

That 50mph section is massive, and has average cameras. Could make up a lot of time on M40 if doing usual outside lane speeds

Yes, still 50 limit.  M40 is a bloody ridiculous idea though. Apart from going the wrong way, the 50 limit is further north than the m40....

M1 from sheffield down to loughborough is road work ridden at the moment

M6 is a bit hit and miss...

I would go A1

.. and 50 limits are everywhere these days anyway. >:( I have a theory that when the motorway's breaked, they put up a 50 MPH limit and Specs cameras to slow the wear to the surface, and when they've collected stolen enough in fines to repair the road, they start work. ;)

Sorry Tunnie, just checked the map.  Thanks for the 'interesting' diversion and, as much as I like getting Tesco points on the companies fuel card, doubt I would be able to explain that one away!   ;)

The car needs to be there for lunchtime and I will be leaving late the evening before, with the intention of travelling overnight then parking up in the services nearest the destination and catching up on my kip.  Also gives a good margin for probs en route...

M1 - 407 miles & 7 hours:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Edinburgh&daddr=M1+to:51.677665,0.123596&hl=en&geocode=FWC7VQMdsFzP_ykjJpilALiHSDEnF-d8exTyZA%3BFWzzGgMdqFn0_w%3B&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=2&sz=9&via=1&sll=51.68618,0.041199&sspn=1.282196,3.556824&ie=UTF8&ll=51.818803,-0.076904&spn=2.556923,7.113647&z=8

M40 - 431 & 7 hours 21 mins

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Edinburgh&daddr=52.116626,-1.345825+to:M40+to:M25&hl=en&geocode=FWC7VQMdsFzP_ykjJpilALiHSDEnF-d8exTyZA%3B%3BFTb7FgMdKLLu_w%3BFbiZFAMd-rgBAA&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=8&via=1,2&sll=52.116626,0.181274&sspn=2.539992,7.113647&ie=UTF8&z=8

So its 21 mins longer? You would easily make that up going M40 at 80 rather than 50.... (come on everyone does 80)

Its 20 more miles too, but, i bet which ever car you are taking (assuming big Jag / Landy?) will be more fuel efficient at 80, than 50.

Don't think its quite so ridiculous  :y

I reckon my tractor was about double mpg doing 80 than doing 40. Related to the TC lockup I guess.

Of course its bloody ridiculous! Still have to go through the 15m 50mph section of M1?  *AND* fight the M42.

You don't even touch M1  :-?

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Edinburgh&daddr=52.116626,-1.345825+to:M40+to:M25&hl=en&geocode=FWC7VQMdsFzP_ykjJpilALiHSDEnF-d8exTyZA%3B%3BFTb7FgMdKLLu_w%3BFbiZFAMd-rgBAA&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=8&via=1,2&sll=52.116626,0.181274&sspn=2.539992,7.113647&ie=UTF8&ll=52.237892,0.439453&spn=2.533079,7.113647&z=8

Not a route I'd choose...

Nor me... The north side of the M25 has lots of roadworks at night and is a complete nightmare :o :o

From your start point to my amended finish point of the bottom of the M11, it shows 382 miles versus 415 miles.  Times are the same, but the A1 option includes the A68 which I prefer to avoid, TBH..

does the M1 still have that huge 50mph limit section? If so, and its a late night run, i would do M40 instead of M1.

That 50mph section is massive, and has average cameras. Could make up a lot of time on M40 if doing usual outside lane speeds
Yes, still 50 limit.  M40 is a bloody ridiculous idea though. Apart from going the wrong way, the 50 limit is further north than the m40....

It's the wrong side of the country :o :o :o

Sorry Tunnie, just checked the map.  Thanks for the 'interesting' diversion and, as much as I like getting Tesco points on the companies fuel card, doubt I would be able to explain that one away!   ;)

I reckon my tractor was about double mpg doing 80 than doing 40. Related to the TC lockup I guess.

My 2.2 is more economical at shade under 80, than doing 50.

:o Sounds like 5th gear is a bit tall then. I think the opposite will be true in a diesel 4x4.

In my 75 mile commute, i've experimented with cruise, and its defiantly no more efficient at 50. Tends to sit at 2k rpm then, slighest dip, hill becomes an issue, engine under load, sometimes needs a change down.

80, it feels just right, instant mpg readout is same as 80, and it just seams to float over all the little hills and bumpy sections. In the better weather got 34 mpg over the course of a tank with it set at 80 all the way.

3.0 diesel could well be different, but over the course of a run, i rekon there is very little in it, especially with a big heavy car

Try it without the cruise - dont think the dbw implementations are great for economy

I've been stuck many a time overnight on the M25... Especially where they're renovating the tunnels on the approach to the M11... There's traffic lights and it's not unheard of for there to be 1 lane, alternately used :o :o :o

Normally i would, but, at night, to avoid that huge 50mph camera section, time can be made up on M40 IMO.

Peak rush hour, yup, thats buggered. But late hours, won't be an issue. Left Sky at 10pm, and its been totally empty on M25
You won't cover that section.  I used to do it all day, every day.  Really no point using M40 when you want to end up at M11.

Normally i would, but, at night, to avoid that huge 50mph camera section, time can be made up on M40 IMO.
fine, m6 it, but then take the m1 down to london!! Why go the wrong way on the worlds 3rd most boring Motorway (M11 and M5 taking top spots).

Anyway, H21 is a big boy, and can choose the route that suits him best :)
