Just spoken to my mate who works on mororway maintainance, he is on the morning shift starting at 5 am this week. But thay have changed the shifts during the snow to 12 hor shifts to continualy grit thier section of the M1 and M18. Night shifrt is on 12 hours as well doing away with the afternoon shirt during the heavy snow.
Shame the councel cant grit a single road every where else in the area.

in reality they only have certain amount of stock, they can only do the main roads. Main A43 here has been clear, local roads stuffed though. What can you expect? The real problems will come after this snow, as the roads are going to be oppsed and local councils will be bust from buying in grit, they will have no money left to fix the roads

Motorways and trunk routes are out to tender & contract on a regular basis and there are a few different contenders wanting the business. its in their interests to ensure they get a good press this winter time to ensure a repeat contract, or a new one, next time round.
The local councils do what they want, when they want. The political colour of the policians in charge may change but the employees rarely do....

Motorways in this area at least were covered by Carilion up to a few months ago, my mate has been with various companies over the last 27 years of working there, new company is A1? (somethingorother) but still the same work mates and depot. All brand spanking new griiting and other vechicles though.

Much the same up and down the country.... The local councils though, have the responsibility for clearing the local roads in the towns and its when there is a cold spell like this that the guys get taken off the bins and put onto gritting the old fashioned way with shovels and strong swings to spread it. In an ideal council area with a sufficiency of grit, unlike here in the Kingdom.... >:(

The day shift on our little retail park got asked to assist in clearing the snow...When asked what tools we had we replied none so that got a response from head office in london "Go to B+Q and purchase 2 shovels!!!".......No wonder they lost the contract.... ::) ::)

Leaving politics, policies, and all the other crap aside, I can deal with losing grip in an urban area at 30mph because I know it's odds on I'll walk away.
Losing grip at 50, 60, whatever mph with armco, lamposts, and all the other shit that can quite easily kill when "dancing on ice" is something I like to avoid.
