Got up at 05:20 for work today, looked out the window and there was no fresh snowfall on the car worth shouting about so decided I'd brave the untreated roads and go to work. Took me an hour to do the normal 25 minute journey, 25 mins of which was getting the first 4 miles to a more major road.
Get in and the Port has run out of salt ;D ;D ;D
Anyway, it's throwing a proper blizzard down by 07:00 and kept going for a couple of hours... I spoke to my manager and said that if it kept snowing I was going home again so I didn't end up stranded... "We'll see" he says ::) ::)
They finally managed to get an outside company in to clear some of the snow as they were unable to keep up! By about 11:30 it had been on and off and looked like this:
By about 13:00 it was snowing hard again and laying on the freshly cleared areas rapidly. We still hadn't been out and done any work because it wasn't safe to be working! Lots of ice hanging from the ladders and steps of the cranes etc...
5 minutes later I got a call from the neighbour telling me that the roads were getting very bad and as she spent last Christmas in Canada I took her comment seriously ::) ::)
Told the boss I wasn't staying any longer, especially as they had already said we were unlikely to do much today :o :o, because I didn't plan to get stuck at work. The other people I know who had to come from near to me didn't even make it in so I didn't feel I was being unreasonable :-? :-?
Finally got through to him that it wasn't a request and I was going regardless of his "decision" ::) ::) so he said he'd sort the paperwork to ensure I got paid. I then pointed out that if the snow which is forecast tonight comes down I won't be in tomorrow, as the roads were bad enough today, and he said he didn't know if I'd still get paid :o :o
I shall let the union fight it out if that is the case as I'm led to believe, from the news reports recently, that as long as you genuinely can't get in they still have to pay unless there is a specific clause in the contract. We'll see ;) ;) ;)
[edit]Incidentally, the picture is after they'd spent 4 hours clearing snow! :o :o[/edit]

i remeber walking to work about 12 miles in 83 or 4 when it was really bad, only a few of us turned up and i was still kept there till 6pm and had to walk home again. not a word of thanks either. i would never do it again for anyone. theres no pleasing some people
-
Are you sallary or hourly paid? Boss seems unreasonable, mine was fine about it all, i am due in Friday/Sat/Sun, all was well for me to stay at home till my boss realised i don't have my VPN dongle yet. Going in Saturday morning to collect it and connect for first time, grab laptop and then legit home again.
I'll work from home Sat/Sun, due in again on Thursday/Friday, and Saturday i am due to go to the Alps via bus :o
Just hope thats not affected, really looking forward to that.

I wouldn't bet my wages on that ::)

My feelings exactly Rich... It's 19 miles each way to work so walking isn't really an option, especially as the roads aren't suitable for pedestrians. I wouldn't have had such an issue about it if I hadn't risked my neck to get in, only to find that they hadn't been able to work for 38 hours due to weather and knew we were unlikely to start today >:( >:( >:(
Especially as the others who live near me didn't make it in >:( >:( >:(
Mind you, I did manage to make a little money playing cards for 6 hours ::) ::) ::) :y :y :y
I won't be doing it tomorrow morning if it's bad ;) ;)

Hourly paid, and he was OK, once he realised I would be going regardless ::) ::)

I'm not convinced either... But that's what I pay the union for :y :y :y

All depends on the company i guess, father tunnie is in the Isle of Man, and probably will be staying there the weekend rather than comming back. Company will allow that to be expensed, as he may not be able to get back, so they would loose out on business.
Once i get my VPN dongle i can do 99.9% of things i need to do remotely, but i guess its a very different story when you work in yards or on the trucks :(

thats the worse part of it. showing a bit of commitment to the company yourself when others cant be bothered.

in last years snow when i worked in central London, i worked for a company which had about 40 people in the office.
I had the longest commute out of everyone, i was the 3rd person in. Only 7 made it in total, i was sent home...
Much as Chiltern trains are slugs at top end speed, being diesel, they are usually ok in the snow

pointless, crappy company cancelled most services yesterday, and I believe a load today. Its a overpriced, substandard service.

Last years snow they did ok, guess this time was just too much :-/

To the best of my knowledge you will not be entitled to pay unless you are given the opportunity and want to take it as part of your holiday entitlement

It seems it's a grey area... I made the effort (actually spent half the day there before saying I was leaving to ensure I didn't get stuck) so am entitled (and being paid anyway!) but it's tomorrow I'm looking at. I'll probably get in but I'm not having another day like today :y :y

Is a days pay worth crunching the Omega for?
I thought not, but luckily can opt to work in the branch nearest home and walk in, leaving the car safely on the drive.
If I could not do this and would not get paid, I would take holiday instead, rather than risk the car or injury...

Not bothered about the days pay TBH... Just the principle ::) ::)

Did the local radio say "dont travel unless its absolutely essential" - a lot of poeple where I work have used this as an excuse to not attend - and I have to agree as the ones that did make it in didnt actually do much apart from look out at the snow and speculate on weather and swap snow driving stories!
I pinch the wife's car in this weather as its 4 wheel drive - but if I only had the Omega then I wouldnt even attempt to leave the driveway.
seek legal advice if they dont pay you, your boss sounds like a victorian mill owner and completely unconcerned with your welfare and well being, he must have been snowed in when they had the "motivating staff" course :)

As above... my boss was fine as soon as he realised I wasn't asking and agreed that I should leave.
As for tomorrow... We'll just wait and see what morning brings. We've had about 4-5" today and it's still snowing hard :o :o I'll still get up at 05:15 and have a look out, if I don't need a shovel I'll have a try and see what the roads are like :y :y
-
Been on the News today, lots of companies do not pay if you do not go in, Supermarkets in particular. They will however let you take a day's leave or make up the hours lost during the rest of the month.

Well... I can't see me going in early doors. This is the end of the road onto the main heath road and reasonably sheltered taken about an hour ago
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4068/4254561307_743bd485ec_b.jpg)
It's taken on a phone so the quality isn't all that but there's been another couple of inches since then! That's a "main" heath road and sheltered... Further up it's gonna be drifting!
Went for a quick wander and the snow is comfortably 8" to the compacted stuff now... Goes to the top of Mrs LD's boots :o :o :o
6" basically settled in 3 hours
and it's still going :o :o :o
If I wasn't too lazy to clear the car I'd be down in the car park at the end of the road ::) ::) ::)
Pictures will follow tomorrow... Assuming I'm not at work ;) ;)

Sourthern jessy...... :D :D :D what would you do if you got some real snow.......... :D :D :D

;D ;D ;D
It's still coming down and, at the end of the day, we can't do any work anyway ::) ::)
Trouble is, under that there's another 3" of compacted snow/ice and too many numpties can't drive... Been at least 2 accidents at that exact spot yesterday ::) ::) ::)
I'll take a view in the morning but not going to bust a gut!
And on that note I'd better go to bed... Getting up in just over 5 hours ;) ;)

I was kind of jesting, doing the same here, watching it come down, will make the decision in the morning if going to go in or not, 14 miles for me, but can stay in the office once I get there.... ::)

Correct

My understanding (wife is management for Wilkinsons, and a mate is an employment lawyer at Wragge,) there is NO legal obligation for employers to pay staff who don't turn up , for whatever reason... unless the circumstances specifically catered for within the terms of their contract. Sickness is covered by contracts and by law, but inclement weather often is not...
i believe they cannot fire you for being snowed in i think.... not without a dead cert tribunal loss for unfair dismissal. and probable compensatipn... but they don;t have to pay you either.
some companies will.... as a goodwill gesture perhaps, but it's not as common as you'd hope...
and as for the self employed like me... i'm screwed.// it's already cost me over a grand in turn over.
there goes the new omega this month for sure.... car fund now put aside to cover the likelyhood of a very poor month.... as we're forecast bad weather and arctic conditions for the next 2 weeks.
-
Well... Got up, cleared the car (40 minutes :o :o) and called work partway through clearing... Not worked now for over 50 hours and planning to start today (exactly the same as said yesterday ::) ::)) so told them I'd have a go but would be late.
So started off... Car was bellying out on the way down the road and struggling to keep moving... Got to the "main road" pictured above... Slithered my way out and into motion, got to the A12, the main trunk road and was fighting to keep it moving and in a straight line even with snowflake and TC on so turned around and came home. Took me over an hour to do about 20 miles. :o :o
Rang back and spoke to the Labour Controllers (as opposed to the manager from another shift earlier) who agreed I'd be foolish to try and get in. My concern was more that I'd get snowed out, in all honesty, especially as they still can't work! Left it that I'd keep an eye and perhaps have another go later :y :y :y
Supposed to be in tomorrow night but, TBH, if we get more than an inch of snow today I won't be going anywhere ::) ::) Due to start again soon and drop almost as much as last night!

Very wise...
Started trying to get the car off the drive at 0750hrs, just got in-had puncture from sharp screw in the snow.
I live only half a mile away from work, told I had to bring car for appointments, but only just got in...
Got moaned at.
Wish I had not bothered >:(

LD as said most employers do not have to pay if you don't make it in to work, but may well allow you to make up the time in the future. As I know your not office based you certainly can't work from home (unless you have a great big crane in your back garden - which from memory you haven't :P). Anyway stop being so fussy and get back to work ;D.
I made it in from home, then again most of my roads are main and roads on the side have been quite fun 8-)
-
Everyone should try being self employed for a year or so then lets see how many don't make it in to work. No work no pay simple.

Wouldn't have mattered this morning... I still wouldn't have gone ;) ;)
-
Although we haven't had much of the snow which was forecast this morning I still think I made the right decision... They're still not working ::) ::)
Mind you... I could have made a few quid more playing cards had I gone in :-X :-X ::) ::) ;) ;)
-
Sent the majority of the workforce home at 12:30, including all the people who lived "in the sticks" having done no work whatsoever :o :o :o
Looks like my decision was right... I'd have had the right hump if I'd spent all day there with my thumb up my arse ;) ;) ;)
Funniest thing is... The docks do not recognise any licence not issued by their own training department so, even though I had a 15 Tonne Forklift Licence I wasn't allowed to drive a forklift. Today they have decided to try and hire some JCB's for snow clearance and were asking everyone if they have a JCB license... Talk about changing the rules when it suits them ::) ::) >:( >:(
Incidentally... Everyone denied all knowledge of how to drive one ::) ;D ;D
-
Ld ? you would'nt happen to work in Felixstowe docks would you ,I ve been running out of Tilbury and Thamesport all week and its not been to bad up there ,worst place this week has been Sheerness. But most of the drivers think someones only got to pass wind and operation Stack is in order up there ;D ;D ;D ;D

I do indeed :y :y :y
The reason for operation stack this time is the heavy snow... There's about 8" laying and they've run out of salt ;D ;D ;D
As for the wind... I used to think that but having been up a crane when the wind was blowing 45mph (at 10m above ground), the safe limit, it's not a pleasant place to be ;) ;)

As a quick update to this thread, I've checked my electronic payslip online this evening and today has been paid as "Unspecified Authorised Absence" :y :y :y
