Title: sony ericsson cellphones info needed
Post by: mathewst on 08 January 2010, 08:53:20
I need a little info on certain SE cellphones.
Actually need info on one of their funcionalities.
Looking to buy a new cellphone and was looking at C702 model.
It has gps and a-gps.
My question is this, can you use only the gps funcionality without a-gps???
I don't want to use a-gps when going abroad cause it would eat my wallet quickly

You want to run TomTom? C702 won't do it, older generation Symbian phones will run it, other option is Windows Mobile, or jailbreak an iPhone

network dependent gps will allways cost money, you really want free data in your tarrif or an add on bundle to cover it at minimal cost, but your right, that wont help abroard.

As tunnie says really, what you need is a smartphone that also has third party gps software available to download to it from the likes of tomtom, route 66, etc.
These allow the use of the phones internal gps only, or if the phone does not have a gps they will connect to a blutooth gps module of any make, thats the only way to get free gps on a portable device.

Basickly you need a smartphone to start with.

Just as I thought  :-/
And the price seemed to good to be true.
It seems I'll simply buy a normal gps device for the car.

This model is preloaded with google maps and it says it has bot gps and a-gps. But I cannot find anywhere about the usage of this two, is the usage always combined or not.

Few years ago i used a Nokia N70, with a separate bluetooth GPS. Worked a treat, i downloaded all the TT maps for USA, only put the states i needed on, and used that for SatNav, was brilliant.

Now use a very, very old iPaq in the car for TT (nice big screen) also taken to using Tyre for TT which allows custom itinerary planning in Google Maps, then export it to TT. Plan to use it for the bike when i got the Isle of Man, as i want to pick a custom route through Peak District.

If your going to buy a normal GPS unit, i would consider the extra few quid for the iPhone....

Google Maps will be expansive if you do not have an unlimited data plan.

I like the Iphone Tunnie but don't like the price tag, and no way I would pay so much for it.
I've found a great toy on egay, a gps with a wireless rearview cam.
But there is some stupid regulation in this fu... country which says you cannot import anything (transmitters) that hasn't got clearance from the goverment agency for using radio waves  >:(.
And only brand name devices have it.

Buy a TomTom, then talk to me via PM (because admin get pissy) for the "how to" update it for free with everything.
