Please do not generalise about the Police >:(
-
WEST Yorkshire Police bosses will investigate the case of two officers found guilty of dangerous driving before making a decision on their futures
Don't really see what there is to investigate, they have been found guilty of a criminal act so they need to go NOW.
-
Why not 'generalise' the police? They do it every day with the rest of the population who are not members of their little gang.
Whats up, are you, or were you one of them that cannot bear to hear the truth?
They did wrong but thought they could get away with it because they are part of the 'gang'.
Boot them out and stop their pensions! Give them a taste of what they liked to give out. That would be true justice.
-
I think what he is saying is don't tar all of them with the same brush, yes there are a few idiots out there but there is also a good number as well.
Its like saying all muslims are terrorists

Can you expand on your line of thought here Bio?
Whats up, are you, or were you one of them that cannot bear to hear the truth?
I find that to be unecessarily offensive Bio and should it really prevent anyone making a legitimate comment without being castigated in this manner?
They did wrong but thought they could get away with it because they are part of the 'gang'.
Can you really substantiate that comment Bio, what evidence is there to do so?
Boot them out and stop their pensions! Give them a taste of what they liked to give out. That would be true justice
Should they be dismissed Bio their pensions will be deferred to age 60 and no further contributions to the fund will be allowed. That's how the system works and is a matter of fact although your remarks, which I consider tantamount to gloating, are ultimately devalued in my view by the use of such language :( :(

I agree, I think alot of the police are so far up their own backsides they have lost track of the job they are meant to be doing for us.......
As an innocent member of the public I have seen this first hand on two occasions.......
On one occasion I was unjustly pulled over after querying a traffic Volvos speed through a residential area when not on a blue light run......I was later visited at home by the offending PCs Sargeant and got a full apologyfrom him for the PCs behaviour arrogance and unproffesionalism....
The second occasion when I reported a patrol car for illegally undertaking me in my 18t truck i heard absolutely NOTHING back........
The Police in this country are there to SERVE US.......not THEMSELVES.......

Both these officers were off duty and committed offences for which they were quite rightly prosecuted - as were the other motorists involved.
Unlike the civilian motorists whose punishment ended with the ruling by the examining Magistrate each of these officers now face disciplinary proceedings where their respective careers, current financial standing and future pension arrangements could be placed in jeopardy. It’s not a case therefore of each officer walking away entirely unscathed.
Every serving officer knows the risks involved when stepping outside the law or police regulations; if they choose to do so then they will have to live with the consequences of choices made.

Funny that, cos I dont think they even see themselves as "us".........
Another example.......police pulled alongside me once in traffic...years ago.....copper my side winds his window down and asks me what I was doing (dancing around on my seat).....
"Nothing mate....just messing about........" came my reply.....
"Not your mate......." came to coppers retort......
Law unto themselves, and until they all earn my respect they will not get my respect.....simple as that.......

I'm sure when they are on duty they have to detach themselves in order to carry out what we ask of them. Then they are required to face up to all the scumbags we can muster to put in their path.
Not an easy job in my view, and made all the harder by superiors who want them to chase targets.

That's fair enough M and indeed you comments are valid where that personal experience is concerned, but does that validity extend to your generalised comment about 'a lot of the police'?

All I can do is base my comments on my own experiences.....I will not say the police are great, because in my own personal experience they are most definately not.....
And I am just a "normal" member of the law abiding public......

Well M an answer such as that can be construed as being disrespectful - just as your reply was. It depends on the interpretation.
You may rightly have considered the officers remarks to be arrogant but surely you can't consider that to be true for all police officers?
-
I consider it to be true in my experience yes !!!

I can accept that M and am sorry that you have had these bad experiences.
In many cases the conduct of individual officers has been responsible for doing the collective no good whatsoever and that's to be regretted but I hope that it won't tarnish your overall support for the police, as without it the system fails to work :y

My point Zulu is that, yes, I have had innocent and bad experiences with the police on more than one occasion, but it appears that more and more coppers are taking liberties with their position....(if what we read is true)
Be it illegal parking, speeding, back handers.......the list could go on and on......
:)

I have no doubt that some of the things you mention have occurred, and are occurring, but I am duty bound to say that it is not representative of the force as a collective – it would be unreasonable to assert that.
Where such incidents are identified then the officers concerned should face the full rigor of the law. We must realize however that the system as it presently stands, imperfect though it is, remains the only means by which a reasonable restraint can be placed upon society in the expectation that the laws of the land are obeyed.
The continued support of the police not only by you but by everyone else is crucial to how this system works. :y
-
But it would appear the system isnt working..........?
-
But it would appear the system isnt working..........?
The system as we understood it has gone M and what we presently have is in grave peril for a number of reasons, so it's imperative that the public see past incidents of the type you mentioned and continue to give support.
I have worked in an environment where such support was withdrawn and I can assure you that the resulting anarchy didn't do anyone any favours. :( :(
-
Am I unusual in that I've never had any problem with the police at any time in my life? Not just the UK police, either - I lived in the Netherlands for 20 years.
The job of the police is to enforce the law (or part of it, anyway). I do my best to obey the law (speed limits excepted), and I maintain a healthy respect for its officers. Result: never had any trouble.
As an IT consultant, I've worked with several police forces, and, once again, I've not had any problems with any of the policemen I've met. There's the usual mix of thickos and clever blokes that you get everywhere, but I'd much rather work with coppers than Civil Servants.
And I have to declare an interest - my son joined the police a couple of years ago. He enjoys the work, but hates the bureaucracy that's been foisted on to job. He got caught speeding in his own car (46 in a 30 limit) a month or so back. He has 3 points on his licence now.
So please don't give me all this cr*p about endemic police corruption. It's not true. If they are picking on you, you've probably done something wrong.
-
I have had good and bad experiences with the police over a long period of time, but the thing that brings it home to me just how difficult the job can be is when I see on the news this week that one of them is driving along the road in his car and a bomb explodes under him and put him in hospital with terrible injuries. Not many people have to put up with that purely because of the job they have chosen to do. ;)
-
Another thread of generalization, due to two members of a police force making 'a mistake' that anyone of us can be guilty of any day of the week. Police when off duty are like any other member of the public, and if they make a simple mistake by committing a traffic offence why should they lose their jobs? Would any of you, outside of drink driving?
No, of all the many officers I have had and still do have contact with I can honestly say the vast majority are only interested in doing their job for the benefit of the general public. They usually act in a very reasonable, responsible manner, remaining human, with even a sense of humour if appropiate, but above all are highly professional.
Believe me when I say that all too many members of the public act in ways that cause the police officers to have to become strict with individuals, when if the member of the public acted in a honest and non-aggressive manner, the police will often take a softer line, although still fulfilling their duty in up holding the law.
There may be very good reasons why certain members of the public have a different attitude towards the police........the level of contact they have had to have with them............!! ::) ::) ::)
-
If they are picking on you, you've probably done something wrong.
For further details of what happened, please read my previous postings......I have never done anything to bring me to the attention of our "Police" force......
-

Believe it or not, I meant my comment generally, and it wasn't aimed at you.
I've re-read the thread, and I now see that most of the grievances about police behaviour are yours - no wonder you were offended.
But, honestly, do you report every motorist you observe speeding? Or undertaking? OK, perhaps police drivers should be setting a good example, but if you start reporting them for what I would consider minor transgressions (maybe wrong - wasn't there - don't know the circumstances) you should not be surprised if you get a hostile reaction.
And as for calling a police officer "mate" - what do you expect? Do you call your doctor or your children's teachers "mate"? A constable is a figure of authority in the community and has powers under the law that you do not have. A constable is entitled to a bit of respect.
I absolutely detest being addressed as "mate" by anyone, but being old, short and fat, I have to put up with it. I have, however, forbidden my son-in-law to address my daughter as "mate" while under my roof! :) :) :)

My reason for taking grave exception the the remark about the police is that my son-in-law is an officer in KWs neck of the woods. I know that he is called on to deal with the dregs & misfits in society on a daily basis, frequently putting himself in danger as a consequence & often being assaulted as he protects the rest of society from the minority. There is also the emotional aspect of the job e.g. coping with a death & then having to inform a relative of the death of a loved one, made even worse when the deceased is a child of the same age as my 2 grandsons. I will not tolerate the sort of comments that are expressed on this forum about the police & would hope that other similarly minded members too will join me in sanctioning those who make them.
Regardless of who you are, one day you will be grateful for the work that they do & the support that they give either directly or indirectly - please remember that before considerating making derogatory remarks in future.
Members of this forum (of either sex) need to understand & practise respect when posting

I seriously wonder how many of you really understand what the police have to do to get a result. I'm not talking traffic violations here or parking tickets. You regard the people you see walking around in uniform as 'the police'.
In inner city areas, where drug dealing is rife and murder commonplace, the specialist units and the CID have to resort to all kinds of distasteful tactics to put the bad man away. No doubt, if made public, these tactics would offend the sense of 'fairness' of quite a few ordinary, law-abiding folk. But we live in a sophisticated world and, imo, the ends have got to justify the means to a certain extent.
If you report Joe Bloggs for dealing and he isn't nicked within five minutes, it's probably because he's way down the chain and justice is best served by leaving him exactly where he is. Similarly, if you waste a police officers time with very low-level violations, he will have less time to deal with the stuff that really matters.
I know that the things that matter most to all of us is the stuff going on on our street. I also know that people will say that more officers on the beat, dealing with minor transgressions, would make us all feel safer. But you have to be realist here. Resources are finite. Criminals are becoming more reckless (because of the penalties meted out, but that's a different thread) and more clever and decisions have to be taken on where the money is best targetted.
I know it's hard, but life is hard, and I cant see it getting any easier.

Sorry guys, but regardless of what you say the Police have to earn respect......
I stand by my comments regardless of your bullying
:y
I would suggest a small amendment to your statement
"Sorry guys, but regardless of what you say individual Police Officers have to earn respect......"
I would than happily agree with you.
"The Police" as an entity does not exist, it is made up of many .. some good, some bad.

Forgot to add, in certain situations, the last thing you need is a polite, well-mannered copper.
