"The Information Commissioner's Office will be able to issue fines of up to £500,000 for serious data security breaches.
There have been several high profile data losses in recent years from large organisations including the Ministry of Defence and the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency)."

Anyone else notice something odd about this announcement from the government? ::)
...
Yep, as most of the data losses have been within the civil service, the government has proudly it announce that it intends to fine itself for its own incompetence.
You couldn't make it up. :( >:( ;D

no problem imho, from left pocket to right pocket ;D
-
So the taxpayer will "pay" the fines. But I bet no one will get the sack as usual.
-
You forget who is in charge. This is just another opportunity for Gordon to demonstrate his mastery of creative account reporting. He will probably report the fines as income for the treasury. And of course, the treasury can't be seen to be funding the fines, so he will cut the departmental budgets by the amount of the fines, producing another saving.
Just because Eyebrow Man is nominally Chancellor, it doesn't mean we will have better standards of New Labour accountancy.

It's gratifying, but more importantly crucial, to see that the general public has been shown, in such an open and accountable manner, that HM Government has used all the means at its disposal to ensure that such breaches of the Data Protection legislation have been dealt with firmly and expeditiously.
Quite obviously many lessons have been well and truly learned from these sad events and I confidently predict that the citizens of this nation can now rest assured that the likelihood of such things happening again - under pain of such draconian punishment - are very remote indeed.
Splendid news all round I think.

That's one way to cook the accounts. :-/

You may well assert that - I couldn't possibly comment.
