Title: Laptop Query?
Post by: Cliffo B on 26 December 2009, 23:49:41
My computer crashed a few weeks ago,and the one I  replaced it with wont shut down the cooling fan. Is this correct? It is a HP laptop 6910p, used but refurbished, it may be a daft question but I know very little about computers so any help would be appreciated.

What is your CPU usage?  Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete simultaneously and then click the 'Performance' Tab.  Monitor it for 10-15 seconds and then guesstimate an average.

Whilst running, or after you turn off the laptop?

Feel rond the sides for the air vents and see if they are clogged with dust, it may make a difference, but does sound like there is a fault.

I would also be tempted to log into the bios setup screen on boot up and check to see how the cooling fans are set in the system settings.

Has the fan been like this from you buying it, if so I might be tempted to think it has been done like this on purpose to sort an an orriginal issue.

I have hard-wired cooling fans in several of my past laptops after suffering overheating problems.

Oh Dear. There is a problem with a lot of the DV6000/ 9000 series of HP laptops, in that they screwed up the design and used nvidia chips, designed for a desktop in a laptop. Trouble is in a desktop, the chip gets up to working temp and stays there, cause it is continually cooled, however in a laptop they only cool when the processor needs it, as its quieter and saves power. So the Nvidia chip get hot then cold then hot then .... which wears it out, so it dies a lot faster. The way to prolong its life was an "upgrade" from hp that basically kept the fans on all the time. If your fan  is running all the time, it sounds like it has the upgrade, although it shouldn't run when shut down. If its doing that, the fan supply is somehow bypassing the shutdown voltage control which it shouldn't cause most of the voltage regulators are shut down. I wonder if some clever sod hasn't wired the fan onto the battery supply ?.

Once shut down, to stop the fan, just remove the battery. To prolong its life, avoid switching it off and on, eg if you are going to use it on one day, leave it switched  and avoid thermal cycles, eg heat up, cool down etc.

If you get bored, Google for Nvidia GPU problem.

Hello, recieved this laptop on xmas eve day so can,t take it up with supplier until next working day.your comment could be correct cos when I first powered it up it worked Ok for a few minutes then became intermittant I finally discovered the power supply lead was damaged  at grommet where it connects into the computer port.I sorted this by replaceing the power supply complete as my previous computer was a Hp and it was the same.I didn't know if some laptops fans ran all the time this fan runs at full lick when windows shuts down and hardly at all when windows is running Thanks Scruntie I now know it is a fault and can take it up with the supplier

oh heck, can it be a faulty laptop? Its under HP warranty for a yr. I'll just not suffer faulty things. By what you now say I might be better getting it returned and  a full refund. Ken can you give me your opinion, thanks

Hi Cliffo,
There is a lot of politics here, I'm an engineer, I make things work, not deal with this crap. You are protected under trading standard legislation to a certain extent, I'll reply with details tomorrow.

Question, did you buy it new or 2nd hand, who did you buy it from, do you still have the receipt ?.

On the engineering front, I repaired one of these a while ago, and posted pics. It still works !. There is a way of repairing them, but........

More tomorrow.

I personally would try andreturn it and maybe take an upgrade to a different model if given the chance.  You mentiobed it was a refurb, so in my mind it allways begs the question why was it a refurb, half the time they just say damaged box or parts missing, but in this case maybe not.

If the psu lead is faulty, that needs to be replaced. As regards the laptop you have to work out if what you paid is worth maybe only 1 year's use. The laptop may last longer, but you don't know. My son had his DV9000 fixed by them; it lasted a whole 4 months and died again. Its not just hp, Dell also had the problem although not as much, perhaps their cooling is better. Even Apple had (and are still having) problems as they used Nvidia chips in some products.

HP offered a free extended warranty   http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&lc=en&cc=us  world wide, which gave a garanteed 2 year life, although in my view that's not a lot if you paid £700 for a dv9000

My view is if you paid good money, say over £225, tell them its fundamentally flawed and to take it back. If its about the price of a 2nd hand one, say £150, then that's not bad; you may get a couple of years out of it, and they are worth about £60 scrap on fleabay.

Oh yes, if choosing a replacement, its the Nvidia graphics chipset to avoid. The intel DV's also failed although not as much as the AMD ones, and weren't covered by warranty.

You replaced a PC just cause it crashed  :o :o

When is this cooling fan staying on? During normal use or when you have shut it down?

My first thoughts are your putting it in standby, and not shutting it down fully. - Hence cooling fan staying on.

What are you actually doing when powering off? Just closing the lid?

Hello all, thanks for all this very good advice. It would appear my worst fears are being realised which came on unpacking the laptop on delivery by parcel post on xmas eve day.1st thing noticed was several loose screws underneath(one was hanging in by as little as 1 thread I felt it sticking out) Then I noticed the 4 rubber stand pads were missing from underneath,as I've already said the power lead is badly damaged, Its lucky I discovered this, please read my previous post.To answer your queries I do have an invoice showing payment on the 17th of this month. It is supposed to be a refurbished machine and still carries a years HP warranty.I am reluctant to make my supplier public until they have a chance to put things right, thanks again for all your interest and valued comment, this forums a great place to be. I can now argue from knowledge instead of ignorence,I will be phoneing them on Tues and will post up on how I get on. :y :y :y :y

Well if that is the standard of what they call a refund then I would respectfully ask for a refund.

Toshiba with windows 7..

Nice one.  I would top the funds up and buy a new one though.

As cem says, Toshiba have allways be ok.

What ever you decide to buy, put the brand and model number in google and add the word problems or issues after it.

Tis a quick way to find out any common faults or issues.

Thanks Cem, I'll check out Toshiba.Scruntie thats a clever use of a search engine, same as what Ken told me to do to query the Nvidia GPU,I now realise. I'll manage a little longer with this slow 8 yr old standby laptop and let the cash build up. So long as Miggy does'nt come up with any surprises.Regards,Cliff. :y

Hello there, All you helpfull folks, just to let you know how my final laptop needs got sorted. I searched and tried like mad to get a Toshiba with a managed recovery partition on the hard disc like my old H.P.and other technical aspects for the price I was prepared to pay,and of course with approval from SWMBO.I finally settled for another H.P this time new from the U.S.A. which took 3 days to arrive at my address. Wow what service :oI am now useing it and in my not so competant hands its a dream to use. Its got a core 2 duo processor 2.2 ghz speed on each core, the decktop label reads" Windows 7 Home Premium(64bit)simplifies everyday tasks" bet it can't help me type any faster :-[ :( Never mind I found it quiet a learning experience finding out the basic technicals after  talking to you guys on the Forum, and then from that of course knowing where to look.
The model No reads"dv6-1354us Entertainment Notebook. For the present I'm well pleased, no doubt on the law of "swings and roundabouts"nothing is ever perfect, just have to wait and see ::)There it is thought I'd let you know how I went on and thanks once more to you all :y :y :y
