Title: Animal intelligence.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 17 January 2010, 20:28:52
From today's Sunday Times.

1.Dolphin.
2.Chimp.
3.Elephant.
4.Parrott.
5. Crow.
6.Dog.

Apparently based on self awareness.....the ability to understand and use tools....and..awareness of the future. :y :y :y

You learn something new every day.

Dolphins, chimps, parrots OK I'd expect to find them on the list.As for dogs, thats sort of expected too although I often wonder whether cats are actually more intelligent or is it that theyre simply less easily led and more perverse (not in the sense Skruntie would use ;D) than dogs? As for elephants, I never thought of them as very smart until I recently read Lawrence Anthony's "Elephant Whisperer" which I can heartily recommend to you all. Not usually a fan of "animal" stories (since I discovered that childhood favourite Tarka the otter's author was a fascist probably  :o)but this made for an unexpectedly good read. :y

Brandy (R.I.P boy), our previous Border Collie learnt how to open the kitchen door on the 1st day. Couldn't work out how he'd be sat in the lounge when we got back an hour or so later.
Same thing happened the following day.
On the 3rd day we left him in the kitchen, closed the door and then opened and closed the front door and waited.
Within a couple of minutes the kitchen door handle tilted down, the door opened a little...and a black and white paw popped round to pull it open.
Out trots Brandy for an afternoon in the lounge. Absolutely priceless to see his reaction when he saw us still there.  Oh oh...I've been rumbled !! ;D
