It has been common knowledge for over a year, and ratified several months ago.

Is freeview and freesat basically the same thing then? (Apart from the way the signal arrives)

Generally more channels on Freesat, including HD channels. No HD channels on Freeview, and when they arrive, will be on a multiplex that no current decoder available can decode.

HD is crap. It's no better than SD on most tvs anyway.
Even on "HD Ready" sets there is a marked improvement when fed with an HD signal (providing the HD interface is actually being used).
Those that can't see it have either got worse eyesight than they thought, or that cheap television really was a cheap piece of chinese shit.

Let me get this straight. I am assuming that the programmes transmitted in HD will also be transmitted in SD? If so, who cares. If not, then I'll be asking for a reduction in my license fee.

Mostly, yes. There are seperate channels, so stuff may be shown at different times, with different repeat schedules.

Picture not great, sound poor and a really huge crap yellow logo plastered all over the screen.
Put it this way we used ITV HD last year for Kingdom and Doc Martin. Kingdom cancelled and Doc Martin we will use Freeview SD as a bright yellow logo is too distracting.
Dramas and Films - no logo on BBC HD, I don't know how much longer chief knob jockey will manage to avoid removing it totally.
You know these broadcasters are thick as poo, don't they realise that early adopters are also sticklers for quality.

Most of my friends thought that the shrinks were right when I laid out £2000 on a pair of subs for the living room, (unsurprisingly) those same friends soon changed their opinions when they heard the subs playing in real life.

Beeb are getting a shedload of flack over quality since changing encoders as well.
Not bad on static shots but degrades on fades quite badly. Moved from 15mbps MPEG2 to 9mbps MPEG4. Will get better when the stolen 6mpbs is used and stat muxed with BBC HD

I can't be arsed with TV full stop, although the missus & kids have ensured that it is there for them.
My weakness (apart from supporting the local landlord) is music.
I watch two or three things a day. But I do like good documentries and also the better dramas such as Spooks, Hustle, LOM/ATA, Survivors, Doc Who, also I reckon 3/4 of what I watch is BBC, I don't do soaps, reality, most sport except motorsports, Olympics and Rugby internationals with England.
US sit coms leave me cold. Few decent UK ones apart from IT Crowd and Benidorm

Films however - I like films, but can't afford all the BD and refuse to stay DVD.
Big TV decent surround sound with HiFi speakers, a PS3 and entertainment central, play a film, or play a movie - this US ad is brilliant
