Title: Sat-Nav rat-runners!
Post by: Debs. on 23 January 2010, 11:03:46
Our major road, the A5(T); through this part of North Wales, has been completely closed (at short notice) for critical repairs because a river has undermined the road`s path, requiring realigning the road and removal of a several thousand-tonne rock face.....

The signed-diversion is 20 miles (or so) via 'A' roads....leaving teenie unclassified lanes for locals to get about with only 7+ miles of daily inconvenience for the forthcoming couple of months: there`s a 7.5T. MGW weight restriction on the 'local access only' signposted diversion.....but, guess what?

Yes, day and night there`s been a steady stream of massive articulated trucks, vans and cars using it.....the 'road' (truthfully, little more than a thinly-surfaced track) has collapsed into muddy ruts and now resembles a scene from the Somme. :o

Not sure if it`s just motorist`s selfishness or a belief in the god like powers of sat-nav.? :-/

Just heard there`s an HGV nearly on it`s side in the lane; the edge of the road has finally given way.....it`s our 'one way in and out': we`re cut off now! >:(

I expect better of professional drivers (like lorry drivers), but average joe public - you know the kind of retards I'm referring to, have to stick all their electronics gonks right in the field of vision in the middle of the windscreen - well, they haven't the brainpower/common sense to:

a) disobey a command from a driver's AID
b) have sufficient brainpower to actually learn to set up the bloody thing in the first place to reduce to chances of this.

Whilst these idiots roam this earth, mankind is doomed

...........Or c) -  fail to notice and digest the meaning of the big red C  painted in the middle of the road as they drive into Londinium, and then get a £60 fine pop through the letter box. :-X :-X ::) :'( :'( :'(

It's all part of the current inclination of people - not just drivers - feeling the need to seek the direction and approbation of others rather than using whatever power of reasoning and deduction they may possess. :-/ :-/ :-/

Furthermore, the drivers of vehicles causing such congestion and damage - by depending on electronic direction to the exclusion of good sense and road awareness - should have their arses kicked at the very least. :y :y

Or, if he's still driving that Escrot, the suspension turrets have given way. ;D

Occasionally my lane gets used as an alternative to the A340 if there's a crash or roadworks.
I reverse the Traktor out into the lane & leave it there if anyone asks it the gearbox is seized & I'm waiting for the AA. The people trying to use the road as a bypass have to reverse back - it causes me no end of amusement :)

My brother-in-law lives on a Welsh mountain on what's effectively a single track road.  Not too bad coming in from the top end, quite difficult from the bottom end in anything much bigger than a Smart car - the Omega can just about get up there but it's touching the hedges on both sides.  There's plenty of warning at start of the road that it's not suitable for larger vehicles.

But it somehow used to show up as a prime route on some satnavs.  They've even had an ambulance stuck there.   :(

TB has pretty much summed it up regarding driver stupidity when relying on a computer.
However by the same token, if we were as organised as the rest of Europe where road repairs are concerned, we wouldn't have roads closed for 24 hours....let alone 24 weeks.

Don't you find it quite ironic that we pay pretty much the highest road taxes in the EU, yet we have pretty shitty tarmac that is NEVER right?  ;)
