Not your usual street drugs, but over the counter medicines.
, because until Friday 13th January 2006 I was addicted to 'Over The Counter' medicines (Solpadiene) taking about 40 soluable a day, and after speaking to my GP who advised me that Solpadiene are NOT addictive, and then just asking a paramedic whilst waiting in the car park of our local Halfords store, he told me they are dangerous and if I go 'Cold Turkey' it would probably kill me, it is called Status Epilepticus. I decided to look on the internet and again was advised not to go cold turkey but I set a time and day, just happened that I chose Friday 13th January 2006 @1pm, and stuck by it. I did it and am now 4 years clean.
It was not easy, far from it, that weekend was a living nightmare that I would not wish on my worse enemy.
But it can be done and I am here to prove it.
Yipppeeeee

Well done Di :y It is a very common but little known addiction problem. You should be very very proud of yourself :-* :y

Well done :y

Very well done and quite brave to actally come on here and tell us about. Not an easy thing to have done. :y :y :y

After hearing about it I contacted a group and there are supposedly more people addicted to OTC medicines than are addicted to heroin. Only what I was told.

Good for you girl :y :y :y :y

I have to echo previous replies, Very well done and i think you're an extremely brave lady to share that with us and tackle your addiction head on, i think others could learn from your experience, a true inspiration.

I was thinking of Scottie on giving up fags, far braver than I, as I am still on 30 a day.
Good Luck Scottie

:y Well done; you`re very brave and courageous!:y
....your reward will surely be good health and happiness. ;)

after speaking to my GP who advised me that Solpadiene are NOT addictive,
Your GP was more than likely talking the physical sense (ie, in the same way there is no physical addiction to a bit of weed, sulphate, etc).
The mental addiction however can be quite ruling for some.

Nice one Di.Takes a lot of self discipline. We live in a culture of being given medicines too easily. I rather think of it like the warning lights in your car: a lot of medicines treat the symptoms and not the cause. You wouldn't cut the wires to a warning light on your dashboard would you?
Good on you, there's something I know I've gotta give up but I'm enjoying it too much... (No,its not that!)

Well done chick .. i know it must of been hard and some days even harder but here's looking forward to the next 4 years :y

Great news D, prescription drugs catch many people out so it's impressive that you addressed the matter and got on top of it.
Many congratulations. 8-) 8-) :y
-
Well done D, you were brave to stay off them when you knew it could be very dangerous. Takes a lot of willpower, you don't see that very much these days :y

Not sure about that! I could imagine it was very difficult to do and must have taken considerable willpower. Well done :y

I manage a substance misuse service with 400+ people on the books, we are seeing huge numbers of people with these issues in the last few years as the amount of Codeine allowed has been increased and can be bought readily in large boxes.
In essence, in the quantities mentioned this is a large amount of opiates being consumed and would definately have a physical, and as Killerwatt said Psychological withdrawal.
You should be proud of your achievement :y and continued abstinence as I have seen many a life ruined and one or two fatalities due to OTC dependancy.

Well done, you must be congratulated for such an achievement. :y
