I know some of you are very knowledgeable with computers and wireless etc. so maybe you can help me out.
About 7 or 8 times a day my desktop pc drops its wireless connection and I have to click repair connection (or on occassion restart my pc) to get it back. I am fairly sure that it is my wireless adapter that is fubared (because my laptop and Wii are both fine) but thought I would see if anyone had any other suggestions?
I think I am going to try and run my desktop via ethernet but the main phone socket is a long way from where the desktop is which of course brings its own problems. What is the longest ethernet cable I will get away with?
Thanks :y

My whole house is cat5 wired as I'm not keen on wireless, there is about 250 foot of cable here ;D ;D The longest run is roughly 60 foot and the PC on the other end runs fine. :y

It could be someone nearby is transmitting on the same channel, try changing that also adjust your mtu to 1450 I found that sorted my drop outs :y

I must agree with you W, same here with similar runs - already too much RF bombarding the house without introducing more emanating from even closer quarters. :y

Use something like netstumbler (http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/) - it can check channel usage. I agree that likely changing chanel number (on router) will cure. Adjust mtu to 1500.

Ok changed channel number and MTU was set at 1500 already so adjusted to 1450. Will give that 24 hours and see what happens.
Thanks guys :y

As above, select a channel that is as far away as possible from all the no doubt generic channels that your neighbours are using.
I had the same problem as yourself when using the ISP supplied router at default settings.
One router change later, one new firmware, a different channel, and jacking the Tx power up to 125mW (from the piss poor 28mW allowed by law apparently), and nothing has failed since here.

You wont have a problem with Ethernet cable length .......
