P4 2.4 and all of our CDs are XP SP2 - which breaks P4s >:( >:(
I obtained an SP3 image, and used that - unfortunately it was not the normal MS image as I could not find one and MS only do the patches.
So problems are as follows
How do I change the licence number to the correct one for the PC as stamped on the CD booklet with the missing SP1 CD?
How do I fix the WinSXS stuff? WHat more is involved than copying the WinSXS off say my working home SP3 PC?
Thanks
Martin
Too much conflicting advice on the internet.
My boss tends to leave CDs on site.

PM sent ... be careful with that link above .. it can cause problems if your install version is not totally kosher .... read the write up first .. :)

The same licence was used in the past on the same PC :y :y

Slipstream SP3 onto your correct XP CDs. Problem solved.

Slipstream SP3 onto your correct XP CDs. Problem solved.
Unless you have Realtek HD Audio hardware ;)

Seems like I need to install a few C++ libraries.
I think it was dot net 2.0 SP1 I needed
The current issue is that executables created on my home PC explode with silly errors.
Got a few things to try then I will have to give up

Good point, well presented, though not a big issue, as surely nobody uses such poor hardware :P

You'll be surprised at just how many use the onboard crap

XP SP3 causes an issue with a particularly rubbish onboard audio chipset which nobody in their right mind should use.
Or, if we're talking about Martin Imber's post, he is trying to bypass Microsoft's anti piracy features, and failing miserably.

i run P4's which have had fresh installs of XP SP2 without issue :-/ (although its a 1.4 not 2.4)

:y DXP SP3 causes an issue with a particularly rubbish onboard audio chipset which nobody in their right mind should use. - Why didn't someone say that in the first place!

Nobody asked the reason , so it was'nt mentioned. ::)

The higher spec P4s were stuffed by SP2
Your computer uses an Intel Pentium 4 or Intel Celeron D processor that is based on Prescott C-0 processor stepping.
And the Sp2 CDs didn't have the P4 patch on them.
The SP3 CD, and the SP1 CD have both vanished - I used the SP3 CD recently and it is not in my house.
All PCs have a genuine licence - none have been pirated.
Two PCs at work with genuine licences were taken out last year by WGA - the so called very rare false positive.
It took nearly a day to sort one of them.

Not for the version you are trying to install, hence it not takking the key ;)
As for WGA failures, I suggest to look into how it works, and that will explain quite clearly why it is 100% accurate in the task it does (WGA checks that Windows is properly activated, thats all. If it fails, its an activation problem).

And you can slipstream SP3 onto any XP CD. As long as the base CD is correct for what you want (eg Home/Pro/MCE and OEM/Retail/Volume)
