Title: Effing internet still poor
Post by: Martin_1962 on 27 January 2010, 21:46:38
Been onto BT a few times, had a BT chap replace the faceplate with a built in filter one. Tried two different routers.

I have lost 900kbps downspeed in the last month, line profile just reset and I now get the fast downspeed of 1888 compared to 2880 a month ago.

I think I am going to write to them as I am fed up of faint lines and non native English speakers.

I was fed up with BT's poor speeds ... in December i moved to O2 on there super fast LLU service and its the best thing i ever  did ...18mb download and 1.8mb upload and its rock solid and never drops :y.......if you can get LLU then dont hesitate and get it ... if its Access avoid it cause its run by BT Wholesale and just as bad .
Check your exchange on  http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php

Mine is SLDIO whatever that means.

Broadband availability overview

ADSL:               Yes
SDSL:               Yes (Via LLU Operator)
LLU services:       Yes
Cable:                No
Wireless:                No

Am further away at this exchange than I was at my last.

but only suffered a 600kb drop to 7.2 from 7.8 so am happy considering I was expecting about 4.0 to 3.5 for a rural village and at worst 2.0

Just found this, so dont know if any of these are worth considering, (AOL will never be considered)

How do you find out that information?
I am with BT and apart from the cost the speeds are rubbish
Just found it, and it says that my exchange is LLU enabled.
Only problem I have is that I am tied to BT for the next XXX amount of months so I guess I am stuffed.

LLU means these operators have installed there own equipment in the BT Exchange so dont suffer from the BT restrictions and speed capping ( thats the way i understand it anyway ) .... either way O2 LLU is 3 times faster than my 6mb i was getting from BT and doest suffer the buffering that you get streaming stuff from you tube etc ... even with 4 pc's online in my house  :y

Just been onto plusnet my provider to talk about the info that came up as listed on the samknows page, a sub page led me to believe that I could have a 20mb connection under 2 of thier various packes, seems this is not the case currently.

They mentioned BT 21CN which is not surrently available at my exchange and no known date for when it is.

So anyone wanting to update, then do your homework carefully and dont upgrate 1st with out checking all details.  :y

Samknows has no reason to lie as they are independant and there data i belive is supplied by BT who own the exchanges so they would gain nothing by lying ..... perhaps " YOUR " provider doesnt want to switch you to a better service and save there bandwidth .... when i asked BT for my mac code they stated there was no way O2 can give me 18mb from there exchange because they own it ...  the woman swore on her life there was no way because it was there exchange and all i would get was " up to 8mb " despite what O2 said .... why give someone 18mb when you can charge them more for a sh*t service claiming to give you " up to 8mb " and in reality getting no where near that .... What ever services are on your exchange as LLU enabled phone them and see what they say ...... what exchange are you on ???

Didnt say they were lying, the point started regards LLU, when I checked samknows showed the LLU options I posted above, I then clicked on options under my postcodeand was told otherwise by Plusnet (Owned bt BT)  So as you say, the lies may well be from plusnet.  Am sure TB will be able to advise better as I dont understand bugga all about it.

But if I did swap, then my Peak time from 4pm to midnight (20GB Peak) and totally unlimited upto 8nb  changes to Peak time of 8am to midnight : 20mb (Upto) so I lose 8 hours off peak but gain double + on speed and 80GB peak bandwidth abd save a fiver a month.  Need to readmore into.

But had a stroppy sod on the phone, when I told him I was a premium account and moaned I was supposed to ne max speed, he told me my agreement was for upto 8mb.  He was too happy when  when I told I was 1 of the 1st 100 customers with plus net and went for the best service from the start  Which was what I wanted, when I wanted as often as I wanted at the max speed available.

To a degree, they have chipped away at the original agreement, upto 8mb I get 7.2mb, I hardly use it these days but when I do I just max it from midnight to 4PM for the hell of, why, coz thats what my package allows.

Plusnet actually booted a load of users classed as the top 0.1%  as they maxed the bandwidth,  At the time I tested it on the news groups for 6/8 weeks and reckon I was at least one of the 0.1%.  When I phoned them and said the above, they said I was not tagged and I believe the reason was because of the package I pay for and dont hesitte to max for a couple of months a year.

I dont pirate or even wtite DVD's I just get what I want and make the most of it, mainly american wrestling.

But I am beginning to wonder what isthe best package to actually be on especially now that I am considering hooking a TV or 2 up to the net.

Decisions, I hate them.  If it wasnt for having to pay £122.50 and £11.50 a month plus an ISP charge I would be happy to pay for a second ISP if there was not the install and BT rentall on top.

All i know is with O2 (which BT said i couldnt get i assume because they didnt want to loose my £40 a month ) is far faster with no peak hours and no limits ..... there has only been one day when i had less than15 mb download because there had been a problem somewhere ..... some days there may be 5 or even 6 pc's connected here if SWMBO's family are visiting and there is no slow down or buffering when they are all on you tube etc ( god i feel old ) .... all the kids between us are all under 20 so all they do is sit on you tube .......so far there has been no traffic managment....best thing is i dont have to speak to India if i have a problem ... UK call centers  .... however i dare say some IT expert says im wrong :y

After a visit to samknows on the 21st Jan saw that PlusNet offered a 20meg  service for 15.99 [first thee months £11.99] thats cheaper that the £21.99 I was for 8 meg. Called Plusnet asked to change package now
on 20meg told me it would take a month to take effect - I accepted that at first then sent them a e-mail got a text say will be done on the 28th Jan  - but coz of distance from Exchange best I will get is 9meg.
Showing 7meg + today first day.  :)

Pretty accurate as far as speed versus line length goes, although obviously you have to take in to account that the actual copper may have a fault, may have degraded over time, plus any other interference that your own equipment may cause.
