Title: Public apology...and a Rant...
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 29 March 2007, 20:41:13
... the apology going to any members / admins I may have upset by my comment "make me" I made in a different thread.  I didn't mean to be rude or offensive at all, I was just trying to follow the light hearted atmosphere of the thread.

I logged in this morning to find my post count had been removed, and was a bit surprised, because I'd thought nothing more of it. So for that, I am genuinely sorry. Please may I have my posts back?

HOWEVER.. I must have a rant about something .. I cannot stop myself anymore....

I may not be seeing things in a very good light at the moment around here anyway. Although tempted to name and shame.. I will not... however I will say that I drove a considerable amount of miles (3 figures) to help a brand new member with a job on their Omega (which of course I was doing out of good nature for free) only to be told that they were expecting someone more mature and experienced - - before I even took the rather spanners out. So I basically covered short of 200 miles at my own expense to be told I'm an incompetent kid and to go away. I struggle with self esteem at the best of times and don't mind admitting this has been reducing me to tears. Daft eh?

I bet you I could be as compentent if not more so than technicians that are recruited into dealerships.

Well guess what. No more Mr Nice guy. No more fixing cars for nothing, apart from a few very select friends I have made here. You can be at the mercy of your vauxhall dealership instead, have less thorough work done on your car, and pay through the nose. Not my problem.

Signing off.. who knows how long for.

Yours most upset,
James

James, that's disgusting, I know how competent you are, as do many memebers on here.

I think LB is only having a bit of a joke himself.

Don't take it to heart mate, we all like a bit of fun after all.

That sux James.  We're happy to give you sh!t about your relationship with Tunnie, but I know a lot of people appreciated your help and expertise at Brackley.  I'm sure the post count thing isn't a big deal.  We wind up the admins as often as we can.  :P ;D

James, some peoples attitudes just suck!  :-[
I'd say you are like one of the back bone members on here. Always on hand to help out with questions ...... and obviously willing to get dirty as well.  :y  :y
I'd say it's their loss! >:(
Now if you fancy a run up north, you can gladly come up and do my cambelt and breathers in around 4 months time. I don't care how young you look.  ;D  ;D  ;D
Christ I might even pay you!

Kick back, have a beer, and sleep on it. It will be much better in the morning ...... hopefully.
All the best
Ross

James,

I for one am completely in-debted to you for the work you did changing my cambelt, rollers and waterpump at brackley.  At no time did you seem incompetent at all, and it was through watching you that gave me the confidence to tackle my cam covers and breathers myself, which in turn has led me to doing another members on this forum in the good-hearted nature which you yourself have shown me.

I sincerely hope you receive an apology from whoever it was who said these things to you, although from what you've said this its pretty clear who the perpetrator is.  As you've stated already, those vx dealers (not all, but a high percentage) are monkeys who charge the earth, cut corners and generally do a bad job.

It is not in the spirit of this place for whoever said that to you to have done.  It shows arrogance and hypocrisy as surely the reason you went is because they couldn't rectify this problem themselves?!  ::)

This forum needs people like you, please don't leave you'll be sorely missed  :(

I couldn't agree more. Anyone who takes the time to browse this site, rather than pitch up with a problem and expect a solution ASAP, will see the evidence of your expertise in the excellent posts you have contributed. Not many would have the guts to take on a head gasket change on a V6, for example.

As to your experiences with this particular member, I think that's a disgusting attitude to take. I wouldn't expect a member to travel that far to work on my car and if anyone came even a few miles I would make sure that they left having been offered some compensation for their efforts, even if that was just a decent meal and a few beers.

Some people forget that internet communities such as this are made what they are through the goodness of their members' hearts. They are the minority, however, so please don't let them spoil it for you.

Kevin

This guy is obviously the one bad apple in a cart full of the very best. If he doesn't appreciate the comraderie that binds this forum together I for one would say he's not welcome.

Don't let it get you down. :y

PS If I could, I would happily donate my post count to you, but I'm afraid it doesn't amount to much! ;)

and older ;D  (couldn't resist, sorry)

Right, in all seriousness now.

I apologise, I have been away for the site for a couple of days, as had M_DTM, and I kept AA away yesterday.  That did leave poor LB66 dealing with everything, and he is busy with work anyway. And busy answering stupid calls from me ::).  So if there was an issue that Admins should have dealt with, it is my fault, and I personally apologise to you.

I am unaware of the sitution, either regarding the member, or why postcount was deducted.  No sure if 2 are really linked anyway, other than a bit of fun.  If you find the postcount upsetting, then I apologise on behalf of the team if it was done for fun.  Not that we'll stop doing it though :p

This site is built on the foundations of a friendly forum, where nobody gets neglected through being inexperienced (don't think for 1s I am referring to you!), or not being in the 'in crowd'

So, whenever personal conflicts like this happen, I take it as a personal failure on my part. And I don't like to fail  >:(

Nobody knows how to do every job on a car, even Mr DTM himself.  I have seen Mr DTM make mistakes, as we all do.  However, I would consider him to be one of the best Omega specialists in the country still.  Whilst, James, I doubt you are as competent as M_DTM in most areas, I personally think you are more competent than most Vx trained techs.  I would have no hesitation in letting you work on my car, as you well know.

All that said, and remember I do not know the situation, or the member involved, I guess if the member did not feel confident in letting you work on his car (for whatever reason), then I guess that is his choice and should also be respected.  It may be an expensive car, his pride and joy etc etc.  However, I hope he appreciated you time, effort, and expense none the less.

If either party want to contact me, or one of the other Admins instead, please feel free to do so.

Although I've never met you,I've read your posts over the last few months and you are obviously one of the good guys.Being 'nice' is part of your nature and something you should be proud of. Don't let the assholes of the world change you.
The world is full of 'users' and if you get used, don't let it upset you.Chalk it down to experience and move on.
I'm sure the vast majority of TC members are decent folk and very grateful for any help they get from others with car problems-I know I am.

Most of us will help each other, you have read the threads about his 2.0GLS, also you have read the threads where he has helped to fix TheGirls (I suppose Mrs TB may be called this) Rover.

I know he is young but then at his stage I would happily dismantle and rebuild bike engines, and at only two years older I undertook a full rebuild on my mums car engine!

Anyway cheer up James, you know where I am if you want a meet up!

Is this for real????

Post count nobbling is all part of the fun associated with poking your tongue out at the Admins  :P and should be taken on the chin - it's rarely permanent and gives everyone else a laugh, even if it is at your expense.

But if the other issue is true, which I assume it is from your comments, I'm appauled  and embarrassed.  I recommend this Forum wherever I can, and it is because of people like you James that I continue to do so.  The fact that you or other helpful members are even prepared to travel to help someone in troble is amazing and you should have received nothing but thanks for trying.

Stick around mate  ;)

Ok, I will cover each part of James' post seperately.

James. Apologies if you took offence from the post count deduction. None intended as you should well know by now.

To the rest of you, no this does not mean I am going soft in my old age!  ;)

To the complete muppet who thought that James would be "older and more experienced!"  >:(
You sir, are an ass!

James has to be, with the exception of the omnipotent one, the most naturally gifted mechanically minded individual I have ever come across. He picks things up so quickly it is bl**dy irritating to the rest of us!
He also happens to be the most selfless person on here. Too selfless for his own good to be honest.

James, you will be back soon enough. We need you, and you need to help us! It is just the way your life is destined to go!  ;)
(please pass my apologies to your girlfriend who will be less than impressed to hear that I am sure!)  :)

I totally agree with this point,

BUT

It would have been nice to have not travelled 200 miles to find this out... if it were the case, I should have been told first, before we agreed I was going down. To decide he doesn't want me working on his car because "I look like a kid" is upsetting, and telling me that after putting in so much effort is hurtful and should NOT be respected!!

I don't want to contact anyone, I don't want to take it any further.. but I will definately learn from it, and be more selective about who I help out in future.

I don't really understand whats happened, and until I understand what has, I am reluctant to take 'sides'.

However, from the little I know, it seems the member's actions were unacceptable.  So you're young? So what? I'm jealous of your age.  If I may get personal for a moment, your head is too old for such a young man, so age isn't relevent anyway. And your experience is again enviable.

I don't want anyone to take sides mate, I would hope we're all above that. I'm not going to do any personal name calling etc, I'm just very politely saying I feel let down by this occasion, and after some consideration, felt it would be good to share it with the community.

well the "unknown" member's behaviour sounds despicable to me.

From my (limited) dealings with James and observing his behaviour on the forums, I would concur with the general opinion that he is a very good mechanic and is (or was - but hopefully will remain) very helpful to others.

However, two points come to mind:

1) if you ask someone for help, you should judge them on their ability to do so ... not on their appearance, whether that be on their age, how they dress, or whatever. If you ask them to fix your car and they can't do the job, fair enough. But they should at least prove this to be the case - after all, if the person requesting help is that good then they should do the job themselves. It's standard practice in engineering fields that if you travel to a job and upon arrival you are not allowed to perform the job, then  a charge is made for the abortive visit. It's only fair as the engineer has incurred expenses (fuel, etc) to get to site in the first place.

It's much the same as intelligence level - this is actually defined as POTENTIAL for learning. So you could have a person of a given intelligence level who works hard and knows a certain amount, then another person who is more intelligent - but is lazy and doesn't use that potential - they could actually know less than the less intelligent person!!

Likewise with age - just because someone is older doesn't necessarily mean that they are more experience and/or skilled than someone who is younger!

2) There are bad apples everywhere. Whether through internet or real life ... good ol' fleabay is a good example - at the end of the day some people have no standards or scruples and are only interested in themselves, don't let them cloud your judgement. Personally I wouldn't go out of my way to help that particular person again, but why tar everyone with the same brush? Benefit of the doubt and all that, after all I'd say a lot of the good community spirit on here is built through trust. People putting themselves out to help others that are effectively strangers ... if no one takes that initial risk then a lot of problems wouldn't get solved !!!

hopefully I'm not rambling too much - don't let the bast*rds get you down James  :y

Having met James some time back, I can assure everyone here that he is athoroughly decent guy. Very competent and whoever this lowlife scudbucket is that wasted his time only to insult his intelligence, should be banned in my humble opinion.

NAME AND SHAME the git!

Ok guys, I was breathing fire when I started this thread..

I've calmed down,

Whilst I was really upset by what happened... mostly because it shook my confidence a bit... I'm not going to let it worry me or change anything

I'm still more than happy to lend a hand to any members of this forum who are genuine... so don't worry. In fact I think we should have another cambelt party in the next couple of months... maybe sooner, definately in the nicer weather....

This needs to be put to bed now.. I've (IMO rightly so) had my rant..Iand it's all over with

I'm not going anywhere... I was only talking about a break anyway, not leaving..

I'm not a trained mechanic, but I've gained a lot of experience on these Vx lumps, so if I can help, I will.

This thread is now closed, please don't post in it again :)

Cheers
James :)
