I know you asked for free one but have you considerd spliting cost three ways with two friends/work coliges with a antiviras that alowes install on three pc`s.

I also use spiebot serchanddestroy as this cleans up a lot of unwanted $h!t.

Where you been looking for the free A/V

Avast is what I have been using seems more sensitive than AVG but uses lots more system resorces :(

Also if you do online banking you may be offered some decent antivirus software

I also use Avast as AVG is a resource hog, Spybot search and destroy is also on the PC and I run it once a week but don'y use the tea time setting as again it eats resources :y

It is normally Macrappy and I won't let that near my PC

Another vote for avast here, just switched to it from AVG on Windows 7 and it feels a lot faster!

I'm fed up from both free avg and avast.. :(

sometimes they behave much worse than a virus >:( >:(

too many messages , many updates..

eat enormous system resources.. keep too many tcp ports open.. make the system busy just when you need.. etc etc..

its like feeding an army of birds just for one mosquito..

I think using win 7 with non admin rights and some attention for the sites you visited is fairly adequate..

keeping all critical data on read only media aside is a good practice..

and if you want to sail in dangerous waters use another pc which you can sacrifice.. ;D and never transfer anything from it

Have used AVG free a lot over the years, used Avast on my last install.  AVG now looks over complacated, all I wanted was antivirus and now have a bucket full of icons, maybe I missed something on the install, maybe should have configured the options on the way through.  :-/

Doesn't matter who makes the software, it will only be as good as the definition file.

I use NOD32 myself Skruntie (free in my world as always  ;) ), but as far as the proper freebies go then I'd say Avast is a lot less of a resource hog than AVG now is.

Antivirus isn't going to stop all viruses getting through, certain malware/viruses (Conficker for example) work in a similar way to BITS (windows update transfer agent) hence they hook into the OS at a lower level than MS publishes for AV purposes.

The Antivirus may stop the creation of certain files that viruses try to create but a personal firewall and having everything patched up to date (ie. a currently supported OS and Apps are therefore required) is your best answer.

All of the above mentioned do their job in different ways, also worth keeping an updated copy of Malwarebytes to run in Safe Mode for those nasty ones.

All my new machines now I partition the Hard Drive into 3 drives, the Root Drive contains my OS and Installed Programes whilsts all my stuff is configured  to be saved on the 2nd Drive, the 3rd Drive is an Ghost Image of the 1st Drive which is backed up once a week.

That way if it all does go wrong big time, I can reinstall my last working saved Back Up without effecting all my own saved stuff.  :y

If you bank with Barclays (like me) and are registered with their online banking system then you get Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 for free for a year. After the year you just have to renew your licence (still free) and can upgrade to the latest version for free too :y

If the freebie products can't clean your machine, then a paid for product isn't going to help you much.

I had AVG and, although it seemed to be doing the job, I felt as though the computer wasn't mine any more. Same with zone alarm pro.
I use avast and I allow five minutes after I've first connected in the morning (dial-up broadband) for it to update and do it's stuff. After that it doesn't bother me. I just use the free zone alarm now.

I haven't had any problems for ages, but I'm careful which sites I visit and I never follow a link from an email.

The K9 web filter that Mark (KW) recommended for the lad has been a godsend.

Avast does require Registration to download/install/use but its free for 14 months at which time you need to re-register. I rate it quite good-less obtrusive than avg, updates nice and quick.

But look out for these toe rags--

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-windows-antivirus-pro

The link is safe,it describes the bas***d and how to get rid of it.

Not bad for something that is legitimately free is it Steve?
