Title: Give it a good polish.................
Post by: Elite Pete on 29 March 2007, 21:59:29
As Timbuk and Theolodian know my car has been driven through car washes all its life and if anyone wants to know what it does to your paint work, well my car looks like its been washed with a brillo pad so tomorrow I and going to get the buffer and buffing paste out and give it a good going over and then if ive got time I will do the car as well :o

I did mine last year after rear bumper resray ended up all all over the car, windows, alloys and I didn't want to take it back to the muppet that did it.  So, full Tcut&wax, and then Simoniz poly magic watsit wax and now it gleams.  It's worth the effort Pete.  I even bought an electric polisher - great for large surfaces but makes your arms ache  :y

Forgot to mention...the polish was in the sale bin at Haldfords - excellent stuff for £3 but no longer available and the polisher was from Aldi and the tinker wobbled to bits before I'd finished.  But you're welcome to come up anyway to see how clean mine is  ;)

Orton road doesn't sound like a holiday destination so I presume you're working.  I'm off to Edinburgh next week but if you fancy a meet I'd be happy to come down to Penrith and show you the sights. 8-)

Watch out for speed cars around J41  :y

It works a lot better if you connect the polisher up and switch it on. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I never use a car wash, over a period of time, they damage the paint work.

You never offered to wash the diesel for me...

I wonder what you could do to clean up that engine bay :P

A colleague of mine used to work servicing car washes. He told me that he'd never take his own car through one because when they'd finished fixing/servicing a wash, they'd take the works van through to test it. After 3 months the paint on the corners had been worn to bare metal (it was a Vauxhall)! There were also some horror stories of the damage they can do to a car when they go wrong (note that most have a legal disclaimer about using the wash at your own risk!).

Even garage jet washes can bugger up your paint work when people dump the brush into the grit on the forecourt.

Hope you get yours back to a nice finish.

I dont think it will ever be back to its former glory without a respray its to far gone for that but if I can remove some of the scratches which run full length and maybe get just a little shine then I will be happyish :)

around where i live are a lot of russian/lithuanian handwash garages so thats all i use now. they are so thorough that for a fiver the car was washed twice and they even open up all the doors and clean the door edges and the internal edges. if you ask them they even change the bucket of fairly dirty water for fresh (as the guy in the merc in front of me did!!!) and for £10 they clean inside!!!  quality.

£10 sounds ok to handwash my garage and clean inside it  ;)
