Title: As ye sow...
Post by: Nickbat on 05 February 2010, 10:16:12
"A generation of state-educated athletes should have been created for the London Olympics.

But a third of British medal hopefuls competing in 2012 will have gone to private schools, it emerged yesterday."

Apart from being non-news (i.e. does it matter where they were educated?), has it not crossed anyone's mind that we might be reaping the consequences of a policy of encouraging "non-competitive" sports in state schools, especially at the primary level?

My children's school sports day is devoid of any competition or prizes. :(

I always came last at sports day but it did me no harm. I just consoled myself with the fact that the ones who did well were mostly daft as a brush. ;D

We'll have non-competitive exams soon. :(

Perhaps it is because those who go to private school are also more likely to have the means to spend time & money on taking their kids to coaching & competitions outside the school?

I agree on the anti competitive thing.

Having attended school sports day last year to see my 5 year old....I can say that there was nothing closely resembling any recognised sport and no competition.

It was more like team its a knock out

Dont forget the armed forces employ a lot of professional athletes.  Sprinters, bobsleigh and the entire biathlon team to name a few off the top of my head.....

....why?  No framework or even appetite for one in this country.  And how much does a footballer get paid to shag around...?

The mass selling off, of school sports fields  for redevelopment cant have helped matters imo.
