Who is the ££££ brains here.
As you are all aware I am waiting for that cheque to clear in America, been told by my acountant it will take up to 9 weeks, and should call her end of March. Is this correct?
-
I am no financial wizard at all, but nine weeks for a cheque to clear, sounds more like two months in someones account earning interest. ;D
Please don't take this seriously, I am really hopeless with money, my better half deals with that. :y
-
Don't know about USA, but over here iPSL (the largest cheque clearing org in the UK) take 3 working days to clear a cheque. If required, it can be walked through the clearing in half a day.
9 weeks! sounds like someone having a laugh to me

hi i worked for London Scottish Finance for a few years, different cheques take different times to clear, what sort is it , personal or business ?
got to say though, i have never heard of one taking 9 weeks!!!!
-
I'm an accounts manager for my company but don't have any direct dealing with cheques to the USA but 9 weeks sounds a bit unlikely for cheque clearance. Even if the cheque takes a week to get there I can't see how it can take another 8 weeks to clear. I would be asking questions if I were you. :-/

It is a cheque from the IRS in USA for a tax rebate.
-
Does the cheque clear into your account or the accountants account?
She may be holding onto it for little while ;)
-
The Americans are a bit short of money at the moment, maybe that's why they're hanging on to yours? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

so business then, longest i have known a cheque to clear is 4 weeks, think someone is taking you for a ride, they maybe earning some interest for themselves, if i were you i would ask a few questions mate.

So its a dollar cheque from a US institution paying into a US bank account (is it?). That should be routine, just the same as here.
-
Its a piss take.....so investigate further.
The USA made a change in law a few years ago via congress.
Previously a check wouldnt typically "clear" for 2-3 days (like ours) from deposit. Now, as long as the route and account # are recorded electronically, it will attempt to clear at 12:00 PM that day and will be recorded as deposit or bounce at 12:01 AM by every bank in America who belongs to the federal banking insurance program (All of them).
SO they actualy have a more streamlined system than us

It clears into HER account and said she will WIRE to me as soon as it clears. (WIRE?)
-
you may be well contacting the FINANCIAL OMBUDSMEN SERVICE on 0845 080 1800 they may be able to advise you a bit more
-
Wire is electronic transfer , presumably to your UK account. It works fine - will cost a few quid (both by sender and your bank for receiving it) and takes max of about a week.
You need to ask why it should take so long to clear at the US end.
-
I assume you have the cheque and have not simply just filed the return?

The fact that it clears in her account rings bells for me.

I had the cheque in my hand and posted it to her January 7th, took 12 days to arrive, even though I paid for expidited postage. so she banked it on 19th January. Seems a FISHY element here.

Is your accountant UK or US based?

Indeed, sa said, its quicker to clear there than here!

can you not get an electronic payment direct to your account instead of cheque

From the US IRS, yes you can......
-
Is your accountant UK or US based?
My accountant is US based, Orlando, Where I sold my house. They (US Government) keep 10% of the sale of property until all tax returns are up to date. I sold the house in 2006 and has taken me this long to get where I am today, no further forward.
Sheeesh, Josh be flogging that car to a stranger soon.

then thats what i would do and get confirmation by fax or e-mail when its processed, they cant make excuses then.

I'll ask the missus once she wakes from her slumber and give the step dad in law a call once the sun is up on his side of the world. They know a lot about this :y

No need!! I do not wanna put anyone OUT
Just have to wait I suppose.
-
May not be f any help! But the company I work for have customers in the US and all over the world and the maximum time from them making the payment to us having cleared funds is around 3-4 working days!!!
I'd contact your accountant and check this out - seems way to long - Just my thoughts!
:)
-
D, I suspct your accountant may be sitting on your funds and earning a little extra from them....I would make a simple enquiry into the events that are occuring on the timeline they have stated.
It may simply be 1 day to clear cheque, 3 months to earn some extra to fund the champagne for the sharegolders meet plus a few days to send it to you.
-
Diane.
If you wish, you can PM me some details. My Aunti in New York is an accountant.
I should be speaking to her over the weekend. I can ask a few questions for you.
Not a problem :)

Tough Di, cause I wanna help. ;D ;D ;D
Ok, max it takes for a cheque to clear in the US is 3 days. Many banks will often clear a government cheque straight away. So that leaves 8 weeks and 4 days to transfer money from her account to yours. Last time Cindy sent money over it took 2 weeks, and that was using the cheap option. There are ways of getting it there faster. Tell her you will contact the BBB (Better Business Bureau) as her timelines are out of sync with normal expected time delays. See how her time estimate comes down then.

How convenient for her.... ::)
She got a boss??

That's ridiculous. I would escalate it and ask them to return your cheque (you may well be able to deposit it direct into your UK bank account). I'm assuming this is a significant amount and for them to be sitting on it for weeks because some one is on holiday is not acceptable.
-
I work for the worlds local bank, the UK chq clearing cycle is 7 working days (although some will allow to withdraw before that)
The US use the same time scales.
but this all changes if its a different currency and can take 6 weeks. but I am assuming its USD to USD
If you need any more help let me know on finer details via PM I deal with international payments every day ;) :y

It is $16,745.45 going into a UK account (Abbey) but they said it will take UPTO 10 weeks to clear, so I asked my accountant if she could bank it in her acount and wire the money to me. That was on 7th January, still waiting
D,
-
she is getting interest on it or waiting on the exchange rate which for usd to stg is worth doing at the moment
16745.45 USD
=
10,697 GBP
sounds dodgy to me
