Title: Anybody use Skype?
Post by: Varche on 07 February 2010, 14:07:52
Now that I have actually got broadband after five years of dial up, I have started using Skype again with a new account. I was one of the very early users years ago.

PC to PC works fine, so I thought I would have a try at PC (Spain) unlimited calls to Uk landlines about £3 a month.

It has all gone downhill from there. I have tried various payment methods and ended up with my Skype acct locked. Today the "moneybookers people "sent me an EMail part reproduced below:-

We would like to inform you that your moneybookers.com account has been locked due to a currently running security check. For this reason, please, provide us with the following documents:

- a high resolution color picture of your unaltered official identification document - personal identification card (front and back), passport, or a driving license. Please, note that the content should be clearly readable.

- a scanned copy of a address proof document - utility bill - bill for consumption of water, electricity, or a bank account paper monthly statement.Your name, address and date of issue within the past 3 months should be visible.

Please, provide us with those documents via email to login@moneybookers.com.

I do not feel inclined to do all of that just to sign up for 3 months to see if I like the service!

Anyone else have this problem? is there another similar service provider?

Sounds dodgy to me.... I thought skype processed their own payments.  :-/

agreed, you can pay online with debit/credit card at Skype's website.

Have allways been advised to avoid moneybookers and credit uion etc as they have bad history on transactions.

I simply top up Skype via my Paypal account; done in seconds and no re-typing in of card numbers each time. :y

Very very dodgy IMHO, I would never release all this info to another -relatively- uncertified party.

Plusnet gives free overseas calls to most countries from my landline, and including line rental plus free UK calls & broadband, is less than £30 per month. Calls to mobiles cost extra. Is this available in Spain? :y

We currently use a service where you dial up a service provider (via IP) at local call rate plus 8 cents set up fee.

I have no intention of handing over that sort of info. If need be I will open a new account and pay by paypal.

Varche, this is bringing something back to me that I read on Skype FAQ`s a while back.....trouble paying for top-up with Credit/Debit cards issued by Spanish banks: is that the problem you are having?

As you say, a new account and then top-up via paypal would solve any 'lockdown' situation....but, when registering for a new one, watch out in case they link your e.mail to the old (locked) Skype account.

`times like this make one so frustrated and notions of 'you' being a paying customer seem forgotten in the race for 'security'. >:(

Mine simply tops up automatically when it gets down to a pre-agreed level, not that I use it very much.... :)
