Its a Dell ?
Check the plug that connects to the Laptop,in the hole in the middle there should be a small pin,is it missing?
If so get a fairly large sowing needle,it should be a reasonably tight fit into the corresponding hole in the Laptops socket--make sure the broken bit from the plug isnt stuck in there first!
Cut the needle so it sticks out of the socket by a millimetre or so and insert it back into the socket, now attach the plug and try your Lappy.

Should be able to pick up a universal one on market day(friday your way isnt it) for around £6, I cant see a cheeper way of buying one than that as posting one to you will cost on top.
