Hi all, I was listening to Steve Rights factoids on the radio today and he came out with this one, marble is always 9 degrees cooler than the surrounding air (hence its use in fishmongers etc) Question no. 1 is is this true? Question 2 is if true why? :-/

1) Untrue!

now that was interesting. :y :y :y

This may help T;
Can marble stay cooler than its surroundings? Of course not. It’s just that marble is a better heat conductor than, say, wood, and it conducts the generated heat away more rapidly. So it does help keep the shortening from melting, but not for the popularly believed reason

The scientific truth is one thing, but as a child, and as an adult, there was nothing better than coming in from the 100+ degree F. heat outside and laying / siting on the marble floor or stairs! mmmmmmmmmmm :-* :-* :-* Just brings back some beautiful memories! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :y :y

We used to go in a place called the jolly friar in Rabat. My Dad bought us all a drink, and because it was empty he bought the barman a drink and the only other guy in the place a drink, he turned out to be the owner, as we lstayed for another the owner bought the next round, then the bar man, an old cannadian couple came in that had moved there, Pops bought a round for every one and that was the last we paid for that night, I just got a bottle shoved in my hand and told to drink up each time and that got replaced every 15 mins or so till about 3am, needless to say we were in thier most nights.
His wife showed her face a few nights later, seems she was from watford gap. Would love to go out there again.

I tried to drink Gozo dry a few years ago, I would love to go back there as well :y

Never went to Gozo, but will return to Malta one day for another vist.
Last time I went I was 18 but had been before when I was 13/14 when we were in Rabat.
Last trip we visted Popeye village stage set, then went off for a nosy, ended up going on narrower and narroer tracks in a marina 1300 hire car and saw the maltese cross, then at 2pm as we were in a bakery at the top of a steep road (think it was on the way back from melia bay, it just started heaving torretial rain down, it was going down the hill over 4" deep.
We travelled back very slowly due to visabilty and st pauls bay where the sea level is a few feet below the road, well the sea/water level was up to the window rubbers on the car, and yes the door seals leaked.
Not been back simce, flipping eck, that was 30 years ago in october just gone. :-/

Dunno about the factual side but most of you have been to hot countries on holiday & the villas are full of marble or granite floors so there must be some truth in the theory? :-/

They still have the Bedford buses from the 1950's out there and they are real bone shakers to say the least.My ex Father in law's apartment had marble floors and it does make a difference in the summer.

Yep, and some date from earlier than that. My school bus was from the 40s, taking us to school in the early 60s, and in the late 90s I saw it still running! I bet it still is, with its holy shrine to Mother Mary with most locals crossing themselves when boarding, and thanking God when safely getting off! :D :D :D :D
My school bus had more than one accident when I was on it, and some of the driving...........!!! Still like that now, but I think the days of a petrol attendant filling up a car at his filling station under our house whilst smoking are now over!! :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D ;D
