England,my England
Goodbye to my England, So long my old friend
Your days are numbered, being brought to an end
To be Scottish or Irish or Welsh that is fine!
But don't say you're English, that's way out of line.
The French and the Germans may call themselves such
So may Norwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch
You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane
But don't say you're English ever again.
At Broadcasting House the word is taboo
In Brussels it's scrapped, in Parliament too
Even schools are affected. Staff do as they're told
They must not teach children about England of old.
Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw
The pupils don't learn about them anymore
How about Agincourt, Hastings , and Mons ?
When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.
We are not Europeans, how can we be?
Europe is miles away, over the sea
We're the English from England, let's all be proud
Stand up and be counted - Shout it out loud!
Let's tell our Government and Brussels too
We're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue
Fly the flag of Saint George or the Union Jack
Let the world know - WE WANT OUR ENGLAND BACK !!!!
If you are proud to be English, pass it on please. :y :y
I just did!
EDIT ---- I'm not the author of above, sent to me found it on my wave length.

Shaw?
And, if memory serves, the thing about Agincourt was that the English didn't lose "hosts of her very brave sons".
Dream on. >:( >:( >:(

Not knocking the sentiments, but....
I think there were a few dozen Scots, Irish and Welsh amongst a handfull of our colonial cousins at Mons who collectively fought under the Union Flag of their nation/heritage......

This is my flag, i'm English, i'm proud to be & i always will be

When i fill out forms & it asks for nationality i always put English. If the option isn't there, i cross out British & put English.

While I agree entirely with what H21 said, I find it completely understandable that English people are reacting in the way that the OP and CD Pete are. When your identity is under threat it tends to make you want to defend it. ;)

Total agree with that ...... would not suggest other wise.

I think this is is a generalization (is there such a word) & in my book includes our Irish, Scots & Welsh friends, in other words ALL of the BRITISH Isles.
I don't think Iggy means any offense just making fun of the fact we've become a wet flannel of what we ALL used to be & are getting bullied in the playground when we used to fight back.

Yup, agree... :y Just the pedant (and Jock, who also has a sense of nationality) in me.... ;)

Which then begs the question - should we break up/abolish the United Kingdom ?
Discuss ?????? :)
And before we discuss that maybe we should discuss how many people actually know what the United Kingdom is, or the difference between the U.K and Great Britain ? ;)
If you resort to google your cheating. :P

Do you know why it's called "Great" Britain?

Bugger it then, lets split it up like it was in the old days, you know into West Mercia and Wessex and the like. Proper kingdoms. With walls round them and castles and armies and serfs and flagons of beer (mmmm) and crusades and torture and outlaws and sherriffs and damsels in distress and......ah ,bugger, think we were still "fighting the moors" then too :( ;D

Not quite sure of your point. George Bernard Shaw was an Irishman. Although he spent the greater part of his life in England, I'm not aware that he ever expressed any desire to become English.
In fact, he is quoted as saying "You'll never have a quiet world till you knock the patriotism out of the human race."
And "Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it."
For the record, I was born and brought up in England, and I'm proud to declare that I'm English. :)

Great Britain is the island on which the larger parts of England, Scotland and Wales are located. It is the largest of the British Isles, which may account for the name. It is the 9th largest island in the world. The nations of Great Britain are part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
We may soon be part of the United States of Europe. :) Probably better than being Airstrip One. :)

This is a long time ago & i hope my memory serves me.
There are three countries in Great Britain (Scotland, England & Wales) & four in the UK to also include NI.
The "Great" was introduced when Brittany (France) was occupied by the British to distinguish between the two.
Unless my history teacher was very wrong :-/
