Well, hopefully the planes wont explode or crash or land short of the runway. I live on the approach flight path to Heathrow... ;D

Solar flux peaks every 11-13 years and hasn't ever caused any serious issues other than a cr@p TV picture. Then again, maybe the public had some common sense left last time. ::)

<geek mode> As a radio amateur, I'm looking forward to it. </geek mode>

Planes use ILS to help them land in reduced visability.  Nowt to do with GPS :y

Agreed. And, although an archaic system, it's much more robust than GPS. Media jumping to conclusions as usual. ::)

What a very poorly worded and miss-informed article.

Quote
Experts said the bursts of radiation caused by the flares interfere with signals from satellites orbiting the earth, causing receivers to fail and lose track of their position

They wont fail at all, they may loose reception from 1 or more satellites but, thats it.

Quote
It is feared this will cause satnav receivers to be blinded for minutes at a time and could result in drivers becoming lost or involved in accidents.

Jesus, are people THAT stupid!

Quote
Figures show that last year satellite navigation systems were blamed for causing around 300,000 people to crash in Britain.

If the figures are true, then clearly they are!

Arh the Skip :y I remember this from my CB days, chatting to some guy fishing just off the coast of Australia :)
I was armed with a Multi-Mode II, a 500 watt buner & a Directional Beam. My parents house looked like a Porcupine & so did my car ;D ;D

Fond memories :) :)

Oh i had a licence, but it didn't cover the Multi-Mode or the Burner ;D The Burner was a Zetagi that used valves & was mains fed :y
I calculated the db's (if my memory is correct) that they all produced & you wouldn't wana stand next to it ;D
I had it positioned on a telescopic pole with guy lines which i could elevate it to 50', but lower down to 6' :)

I expect it's obsolete now :-/

I am thinking about that now, you must have bounced off the ionosphere at least twice to reach Oz.  Fair game!  :D

Lol, nice units...

So about 4 times the effective output of the standrad 4W (legal) output for the FM based setups.....

I used to have a Ham International Concorde II.....must have a look at my parents see if its still about.

If you like Valve transmitters you should have a look at my mate's little project.

"next generation" enhanced landing systems will use GPS inputs to a large degree

LAAS  : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_Area_Augmentation_System

GNSSA  : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_Based_Augmentation_System#Ground_Based_Augmentation_System

The whole idea is to reduce the time/distance between each aircraft on the approach, as this is the major bottleneck. On an ILS a minimum of 5 miles has to be maintained between aircraft to avoid the "front" one affecting the signal to the one behind.

there is also a major cost saving .. at present each runway needs an ILS at each end ... so O'hare needs 12 ILS installations ...  :(

With LAAS one install does the whole local area ...   :)
