Just seen this ad

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought they only did this in a 2ltr :-/

Quite possibly an import. Note, no pics of the instrument cluster....

Nice cars though, but parts are rather expensive!

Yup, 1.6 4 cylinder (very rare and bloody awful) and 2.0 V6. The 2.5 was never available in the UK direct from Mazda UK, but as a grey import there are a couple about.

As a Mazda parts advisor can I just say, don't go there.

Yes they are pretty reliable, but simple parts cost an absolute fortune.

Headlamps (not Xenon type) are over £300 each, front foglamps are £180 each, cambelt & tensioners comes to £800 in parts alone, front bumper (unpainted) £350.

If you go for a grey import version you can add about 50% to those parts prices too.

OOO stevie how can you say that ? I have an MX5 and an early version 6 both imports, spares for these are exactly the same for import and a UK registered car. Because misinformed storekeepers suck through their teeth and say the same words. Just dont tell them its an import. ARE NOT ALL THE CARS MADE IN THE SAME FACTORY ?
What I have found is the UK cars do not have such a high spec as an import, imports are slightly cheaper, and you still get a warranty from the dealer.
Look around you, I would say that a third if not more of MX5s are imports as are the 4x4s you see on the road.(Look for the square numberplate) Thats a lot of cars that you are not getting any profit from. Come clean and you will get a lot more trade.
I belong to the MX5 OWNERS CLUB and every month there are 20 genuine mazda dealers advertising in there and they dont care if its an import spare or not, its the same price. In fact they give a discount for members of the club.
Rant over so i'll get me coat.

There is a lot of mis-information about imports.

The fact is, some parts are the same, but a lot are not. For instance a 1989 UK MX5 bumper is about £250. The equivalent Eunos bumper is almost £600. Yes, the UK one would probably fit, but it is not OE and is not original fit.

I have to say, even as an "import friendly dealer group" (We supply the majority of genuine import parts over the whole south west), I would never personally buy an import Mazda.

If there is an equivalent model in the UK, such as the MX5 & Eunos Roadster example it isn't the end of the world, but with vehicles such as the Bongo van/ MPV/ camper people expect dealers to keep parts in stock, and don't understand when they are expensive and take months to arrive.
A local Autoglass had a Bongo come in with a smashed quarterlight. As this part had not previously been ordered in the UK or Europe we had to email Mazda UK to make the part available, they then had to contact Mazda Europe, who in turn have to contact Mazda Japan.
The glass in question was over £300 and took 13 weeks to arrive.

Another example with Bongo's is if you have a 1999> version the headlights are £830 each + VAT.

Incidentally from 2003 Mazda UK offer absolutely no warranty support for any Mazda vehicle sourced from outside the EU. The only exception is with safety related recalls, and even then the customer is liable for the cost of parts.
