We have at least 3 elderly relatives that need to be carrying a mobile when they are going about their daily activities home or away from the home.
I suspect they will never receive any calls or make a call except in the case of an accident or mobility scooter breakdown.
Any advice on a simple to use and cheap option that will work when needed would be appreciated. The thought of them going to a mobile phone shop and being fleeced doesn't bear thinking about!

been on the lookout for one too, a lot of them the buttons are too small, grandparents also have problems adding topup, and its a hassle for them, will get the cheapest contract possible, ones out there for £10/m

Seen one that might be what your looking for, its in my mates phone shop, bit bigger than a normal phone with large buttons very basic I think just to make calls, 3 bottons you can program to speed dial and green and red buttons to make and end calls. Will be going in tomorrow can get details and post later if you want to look it up, not sure how new it is or if still avalible but there may be something like about.

I would forget the contract idea and go PAYG, if not used much its the best way.
As for the phone, I would look on Ebay and get them a Nokia from a few years back.....eg 1110, 5300, No camera on them, but basic and nice and easy to use.....

If it must be contract, then Orange were doing a £5 a month deal for 50 mins and 50 texts I think which included a new basic type Nokia too......

I struggled to get my parents to use a mobile `phone: so, I bought my Father a phone with big buttons.....but the only one I can get him to push is the 'A' button.
The one to answer a call; so called, because he mostly says "Eh?"......Eh?......it`s no good I can`t hear you!" ;D

try this, ideal for those with bad eyes.

Binatone speakeasy is designed for the elderly, big buttons, basic functions etc. I got my Dad one for Christmas from an ebay shop for around £50. PAYG unlocked. He thought it was perfect for his needs, although on the particular one he had there was some sort of problem in that it didnt seem to recognise the fact that it had a sim card in. ie no network connection. But I would imagine it is just a problem with that one rather than the type of phone.

There's a few here, with reviews:

Maybe a point to note....
If its for emergency use only....afaik....any mobile (regardless if its got credit or not (payg)) will allow a 911 (same as 999) call....and will use any network it can find to make the call....

For Dad we have an old Nokia ( the keys are larger than the newer models) the phone is set to predial certain numbers so all he has to do is push and hold a certain button. Selotaped on the back in large writing is the list for the predials.
Works ok for our family.....

I dont need a big button phone, my eyesight is good. Skruntie, however, should consider getting one in for the not-too-distant future. ;D

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll sift through the options and see what I can get organised.
