I am a long time lurker but don't post much.  You seem to be quite a bright lot so I thought you would be good guys to ask. (flattery will get you everywhere)

In Dec 2008, I bought a Seiko watch for about £350 from a jeweler on the Orkney Islands.  I now live in Aberdeen so can't take it back to the shop.

This week, the watch has started cracking on the inside of the rubber straps.  In my opinion, this must have been caused by putting the watch on and off as this is the only time that the strap is bent in that direction.  The outside of both straps is undamaged. 

Today I e-mailed Seiko to see about a replacement and they say that the strap is not covered under my 2 year warranty because it is succeptable to 'wear and tear'  In my opinion, the damage is not due to wear and tear but down to faulty materials.  I could see this happening due to wear and tear on one strap but not to them both at the same time!

I don't think I am being unreasonable in thinking a strap on a £350 watch should last more than 14 months.  My last watch was a £50 casio and it lasted 6 years!  I intentionally bought an expensive one expecting it to last me a long time.

I am looking to compose an e-mail back to them and I am looking for some ammunition.  Any suggestions?

i think under statutory rights in scotland you can expect any goods to be usable for a decent period - i think its 5 years in scotland m8 - good luck

Mig is good, getting to be near how I am wanting it now.  Just a few niggles and some sports suspension, and some rear bushes to sort out yet, but thats just the usual with me.  Never happy until it is perfect!

How is your new store getting on?

glad to hear it - i might buy it back once you've sorted her out  :y ;D

stores doing OK m8 thanks :y, i'll not be retiring anytime soon to the Bahamas tho  :(

They are manned by staff who are accredited to give consumer advice on your legal rights (if you ring from Scotland the advice will be based on Scottish law).
