.....today: arrived at my sister`s house to hear a hissing sound, quite loud.....`checked under the bonnet as I thought it might have been a recurrence of the coolant leak I recently had.
No sign under the bonnet but the hiss continued, and got louder as I checked the off-side engine area, and then VERY loud as I bent down near the tyre.
Off with the wheel to find a 5 inch circumferential split in the inner edge of the tyre at the tread-sidewall corner.
Had just done 45 miles on the motorway at 70 mph speeds and had checked the tyre pressures before departing......I bought a lottery ticket; as clearly, it`s my lucky day. ;)
I had (recently) noticed a new vibration upon braking; when passing through 30-25 mph...I imagined a balance weight had come adrift, but with the spare fitted on the way home, there was no such vibration....note to self: "listen to the car, check the inner surfaces of tyres and don`t ignore new symptoms"

Shocking to say the least D, glad there was no dramatic event - you're quite right of course, the ability to listen and make sense of what you hear, is a blessing :y :y
-
Bugga, glad nothing happended whislt you were on the move. :y I think that is also a message to the rest of us regards checking all the tyre and not just the pressures and tread depth. :-[
P.s. can you PM me your lottery numbers please. ::)

That was lucky Deb's, well spotted....... :y

I'm glad you're fine Debs......that's the important thing..... :y :y :-*

Nice one girl :y :y :y Glad it worked out the right way ... could have been nasty.
-
Debs so glad you are ok
let this be a lesson to all to check our tyres properly at least every two weeks including inner edges and pressures
on another note might be worth getting the suspension/steering checked as that tyre has worn badly on that inner edge HTH

Nasty! I had something similar a few years back - stopped to recycle some bottles, headed off again to the main road (the A55 - you'll know that one) and got the impression something was wrong. Unfortunately, I just reached the end of the slip road before it became clear where the problem was - the steering. :(
It wasn't until I found a safe place to stop that I found the chunk of unrecycled bottle in the nearside front tyre. It b*ggered up the steering geometry horribly and Volvo never managed to get it sorted out - cost a lot of money, that did. And just thinking about the 3 miles I had to drive on a dual carriageway with erratic steering gives me the willies even today. >:(

That is so scary Debs. I don't think any of us would have picked that one up. Glad you're ok sweetheart. :-*
