Title: Theft of LPG tank !
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 01 March 2010, 15:17:23
Can you believe it, my 100 litre 4-hole LPG tank was stolen last night, between the hours of 8pm and midnight. I kid you not!

Admittedly, it was in a less than ideal place, being in Maria's front patio - but the fact is someone has physically entered the property and nicked it  ;D

Can't say I'm worried.. I just hope the recipient is aware that it contains highly pressurised flammable LPG  ::)

Last year I was at Thompsons scrap yard 'up north' and we popped out for some lunch, walking back there was a pikey pickup parked just down the road with 4 fridges on the back....with the pikeys using an axe to cut the pipes and vent the refridegerant.....

It would fit... Mine's a 90, same length as your 80 but 400mm Diameter (which is what the 100L is) but would be tight for access to the Carin and possibly the spare :-/ :-/

Also... The mountings for the 90 wer a royal PITA whereas I believe the 80 fits nicely to the chassis rails?

Sorry to hear of the problems BTW... Sure it's actually something silly and easy to rectify :y :y

I removed the CARiN to give more room.  The 80l fits nicely, giving a bit of space around it to ram extra junk that she insists on packing when we go away ::)

Too much potential for a cock up and leave a car unusable, which is a problem if people have traveled large distances  :(

I really believe in stages would work well.

1. get the spare manifold down to KW who has kindly offered to drill/tap it for a reasonable no of beer tokens.

2. Spend one day max fitting the manifold and gas injector rail and 4 bits of pipe. This is basic stuff, nothing technical. Your car runs as before. Don't forget to clean the breathers before fitting !.

3. Fit the vapouriser and connect to the water supply to the carb and the output to the rail. Again nothing tech, just drill a couple of holes and fit a couple of bolts.

4. Fit the tank and do the pipe and solenoid/ gauge cable run. A bit of help would be a good idea here to get the best positioning.

5. Next finish off wiring and check/ commision everything.

The first 3 steps could be done easily by most Miggy owners capable of servicing, and to do the last couple, well a day, 2 max, provided all the bits were available.

Yep... It can be done in a weekend if you know what you're doing (which Kevin and Chris both do on the LPG side and TB does on the strip/rebuild side) but you need to work methodically ;)

I'd be more than happy to commit to a weekend for a conversion... But it has to be with the option for an extra day to "tidy up"

Interesting, do you think position affects things a lot ?.  You fitted yours right next to the head inlet, mine was a good bit further down. Mine works OK, doesn't run brilliantly, but I put that down to the adjustment software underfueling at high demand.

Something that really p1sses me off is the way they think that anything lying around is fair game >:( last month I had a load of ally stolen from the service area behind my business premises. I was going to weigh it in myself but never got around to it, it didn't have much value maybe £15. If they have asked I would have probably given it to  them but the thievin pikey b@stards just helped themselves.

'nouts safe these days.  My missus thinks I'm paranoid, but the only people I want on my property are the ones I invite.  I get twitchy at the paper boy, and the ruddy great footprints in my flower beds put me right off our postie.

I had a bath nicked from outside my house once.  Cast iron tub.  I was in the midst of refitting the bathroom, went to work, came back and it'd gone.  I lived in a cul-de-sac and the bath was behind a fence you'd have to make an effort to look over.  I only hope they dropped it on their head trying to get it away.

I don't think it's that critical. Unlike petrol, you're not trying to keep an atomised liquid in the airflow. However it gets injected it will mix readily with the incoming air in the swirl that gets caused as it flows through the valves and into the combustion chamber.

The main thing to ensure is that it doesn't flow up the intake manifold. As long as it's angled towards the valves it should be fine.

I agree.. Although there is some on the LPG forum who say the optimal entry angle is 90 degrees to the airflow... Which has some merit for mixing purposes I suppose :-/ :-/

Mind you... I've no complaints :y :y

Yes, I've heard the 90 degree advice. My take is that if you inject it at 90 degrees it will hit the opposite manifold wall and 50% will go back up the intake tract.

Even on a sequential setup it's not always injecting into a moving airflow because the injector duration is longer than the intake stroke for most driving conditions.

I think the way we do the V6 manifolds is probably pretty much optimal. If you look at the angles, they do fire across the airflow at a reasonable angle, 45 - 60 degrees at a guess, yet the gas is injected low enough down the tract that if it does flow back up, or build up behind a closed valve, it's unlikely to get scavenged by neighbouring cylinders.

I can't see it flowing back or getting trapped... You couldn't get them any closer to the petrol injectors ;D ;D

Back to the LPG 'party', I think, as has been suggested, thats not going to fly.

We have proved that 2 experts, and somebody capable of stripping/rebuilding simply cannot do a car in one very long weekend.

Possibly if the owner could do the non-technical stuff, eg mounting tank before hand, that could make one possible in a weekend??

It can be done in a long weekend but you have to work on 1 car only, and be organised! The trouble comes if you run into any unforeseen problems, as you did :( :( Yours would have been done otherwise ;)

We've said all along that a "Party" is a bad idea and your conversion has proven this. I'm still willing to help out over a weekend but it has to be started on the Friday night, even if all you do is strip down so there's a clear run at the "Fitting" on the Saturday.

Hopefully Kevin will get to the bottom of it quickly and, if it does prove to be the loom, Teilo will replace it without question!

If you have issues contacting him let me know and I'll try (I have direct dial numbers and a mobile number)

I've just finished a batch of weekends, with my 3 on 3 off, sadly this weekend i am away, and towards end of March its possible i will need the boot as might have a euro road trip in the making, not sure yet  :-/

April is looking much more likely, as discussed with TB, couple of days is needed first to mount the tank & filler. Then have dedicated day for front end only, as once thats apart it has to be done.

My method of work (for mine) was:

Check all components and go through Loom, marking all connections. (can be done in advance)

Fit Filler, especially if cutting a body panel! (Can also be done in advance)

Strip off bumper (for ECU mounting and ease of loom run), plenum and manifold.

Fit complete front end, including all wiring and get wiring into cabin.

Do pipe (and Cable) run from front to rear and into Boot area having already measured and marked out tank location.

Re-assemble front end and check car starts and runs OK on Petrol.

Fit tank.

Connect up and check all connections. Do internal wiring if not already done earlier.

Connect Laptop and check ECU Comms and everything else is reading out. Drive to LPG station and fill up (after checking for leaks in fill line!)

Drive home on Petrol.

Run Auto Calibration, checking for leaks.

Drive out checking Petrol map and collecting LPG map.

Tidy everything else up.

It's doable, but a lot of work :y
