Title: Television woes
Post by: STMO999 on 06 March 2010, 18:03:37
I've got a philips 32" LCD that I've had for just under three years. If I've been watching sky sports or the like, where the scores are on the screen for any length of time, then I can still see the outline of them on the screen for ages afterwards. I'm watching the football now and the pitch has got a big red square on it. Too old to take back but not old enough to chuck. :(

Does this make sense?

https://www.pixelprotector.com/index.php?gclid=CMDgtoPdpKACFQU9lAodrE05ag

Screen burn can be reversed by repeatedly subjecting the ghosted pixels to rapidly changing images and screen washes it's possible to reduce or even remove the effects of screen burn. The amount of time it takes to remove the burn in depends on how bad the burn was to start with some will need persistent use of screen washes before the screen burn is fully removed. There are a few programs to use if you're looking to remove screen burn. pixel protector calibrates the phosphor intensity of the pixels and can be used on any display that can display information from a DVD. On the DVD you will receive multiple diagnostic and removal tools for screen burn issues

Might be a no-no, but who knows?

I though screen burn was a permanent fault on the screen. If I switch mine off for 15 mins, it's ok again. Don't know :-/

Mine does it too, Steve.....the Sky/BBC news ticker and using the Tv to watch my security camera feed both cause ghosting; high-contrast items and red areas (in particular) on the screen are the worst offenders.....generally, I find the ghosting does fade after a on hour or two 'off' and/or watching channels with much movement.
Mine is a cheap (Medion) 27" LCD about 4 years old (all I could afford). :'(

I always thought LCD`s didn`t suffer from 'tube-burn'. :-/

It`s not just the cheapies: my friend has an expensive Sony 32" LCD and that`s developed an intractable case of image-staining.....`looks for all the world like the screen needs a good-wash; except it`s on the inside! :(

Thank God! I am not alone ;D

I must confess, it is on for about 16 hours a day, every day. :o

As mentioned I didnt realise LCD suffered from burn in, seems the plasma's might.  Is this something they neglect to mention in the sales patter.

It also doesnt help with most channels now having permanent logo's in the corners of the screen.  It would help if they moved ever so slightly to avoid it. (maybe thats one for Tunnie to bring up with sky bosses - just remember who thought of it if they offer a free years subscription.)

People will think I'm nuts, but I rent my TV! Yes, I rent it!

Like STMO, I've a 32" Philips at the moment. I could go out and buy a TV, but this way I can upgrade whenever I feel like it and if it goes wrong, I can just phone them up and they'll come round with a replacement. Financially, it's not that sound a deal, but if I hadn't been renting I'd never have got rid of the old CRT. ("Yes, Dear, we'll get a new TV when this one goes wrong....").

Besides which, in a couple of years time the new OLED technology will kick in and we'll be watching TVs on pull-down screens....

...probably.  ;)

I got warned when I bought a plasma that screen burn may occur. Least of my worries when the f***ing thing just stopped working one day  >:(

Why is the toshiba regza so cheap on this page?

The problem is that LCD is that its essentially a blocking technology - remember the original B&W displays, black or white. The TVs work by shining a backlight through the display - which is why they often have a washed out/low contrast display.

Plasma has its own setbacks, but the way to go is LED. It's just starting to become available as LCD with LED backlight - but OLED itself will be the answer. Available now but expensive and small screen size.

As with most technology, the manufacturers are milking what they can - but prices are dropping steadily ...

My plasma recently died, but was a simple repair - two caps in the power supply, but 2 weeks though  :-?

I bought a Vierra in the end, but it has a 5 year Panasonic Warranty with it, basically bought it for watching movies and gaming, also like it as a huge PC monitor via HDMI.

They warn of screen burn with in the first couple of pages on the user manual.  So basically if LCD and Plasma are suffering levels of screen burn, then like STOM has mentioned, it's going to be the screens  with static images and logo's that will eventually cause problems.

I have a projector that I wanted to use for gaming to get a huge screen projexted on the wall, but when it came to decorating the walls were a mess in certain places and especially the wall I wanted to project on to so I had to paper with a strong patterened paper hence now buying the TV.

Yeah. But are they inferior to the others? I notice it's the only one that doesn't mention 1080p?

We had the same problem with one of our SCADA screens in the control room at work. It was displaying the same screen, with only a few numbers changing and a few bits changing to green (i.e. pump running), almost 24hours a day. The screen was oppsed in the end and had to be replaced  :D
