Title: SKY -Yet Again
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 07 March 2010, 14:45:23
Fed up with the rather box locking.  >:( >:(

This time, blue screen out put on both Scart and HDMI (TV x2, 1 connected to each one)

Panel comes up tochange channel and lets you move arround the choice guide and eveninput numbers.  But wont change channels or display a screen.

Just gone into saved recordings and menu is ok and allows me to play a movie.

Time for yet another call to sky me thinks.

I have to do that quite a lot. Tried to take it off but it wont let me. Fat lot of good it is if I want to record a film and all I get is a blank screen with 'Enter PIN' on it.

Powered the box down and reset and all was well as usual.

Decided to add my DVD recoeder to the setup to back some films up.

TV is a Toshiba CRT jobbie, has 3 scart inputs with Sky box being on Scart 1.

For setting up purposes I plugged the DVD Rec (DVR) into Scart 1 on the TV as I had to run the lead round the outside of the cabinet so plugged in Scart 1 on TV, then Linkd the other DVR scart to the Sjy Box and plugged the Scart to TV SCaert 2

Sodding Sky box wouldnt yune in and the wriring looked odd, so reran the scart lead into S1 on TV.  DVR to S2 on TV, and linked the SKY and DVR together.

Now there's no rather sound while watching Sky.
Plus the writing is pink on the DVR.

Should the SKY and DVR be linked together for copying,

Or do I take out one one the TV scarts  and just link the DVR and Sky one through the other

rather things, hate em when not in the mood for it.

Just had a look at my new TV manual.  For that it says scarts fom both units to TV (Relevent sockets that is)  But mentions the link scart has to be fully wired, am assuning it means all 21 pins, so need to check.

Otherwise my wiring seems correct unless S2 on TV is not up to the job and may have to use S3 which comes up as EXT3 rather than EXTs or EXT1.  Not sure what the s stands for. :-/

All sorted.  Scart 2 on TV not suitable.

Ah well, all sorted and starting to chill out.

Just want a .5 metre (or shorter) and 2 x 1 metre scart leads now.

If you had a newer TV, i'd go HDMI to the TV, and scart directly from the box to your DVD RW

I do but this isnt it.

The HDMI does actualy run to the flat screen as will the DVR when I find the other HDMI cable.

Not a problem now, got it all sorted.

Still pi$$ed off with the sky box though, shouldnt be locking up once a fortnight.

You will need a ton of TNT, Sky site is massive! Takes about 15 mins to walk from one end of the main site to other, 40 mins if you include outer buildings, then of course there is Scotland, Brick Lane, Chilworth, Southampton...

But why are they locking up so often.  I wouldnt mind if was was playing about with the remote/settings etc, but the rather thing just locks.

Would they suffer if there were tiny power drops in the system.

I have noticed an odd glitchwith the lights on my illumited keyboard, something (Power wise) clicks in the house and the KB light flicks off/on.  But does not reset the PC or modem which seem very sensitive to even the tiniest power flicker at times.

I'll ask around, i have a feeling its disk space. Got HD box down stairs, that as said crashes once a month or so, got a standard + box in my room, its been faultless for months, but always has 60% free, unlike the HD which is usually 10-20%

Sh1te hardware, sh1te firmware. Built down to a cost that makes them just about acceptable. That's good enough for Sky. ::)

Rebuilt the power supply in mine with decent quality capacitors, for example. Improved it no end. Several of the ones that came out were the cheapest sh1te available and degrading badly. Ditto the CPU. Runs very hot but it would have cost them a few more pence to have put a heatsink on it.

You can always call them and threaten to cancel unless they sort it..?

I also have the ability to add an external hard drive which is something I cannot do with the Sky box, plus I can also play Divx, ass pictures and music that the Sky box wont allow.

Am now wondering if I can copy from the PC via USB to the USB on the DVR, and if so does the DVR have to control it the transfers.

And you wonder why I like Media Center ;)

The flexibility - I can add just about any tuner I like, I can play any file format I like, I have a built in DVD not only to play films, but also back up any recordings, and I can allow any xbox (wired or wifi) in the house to not only watch live or recorded TV, but also schedule records, access the music/photo/video collection etc etc.

And then, being a computer under a 40" telly, if we have friends/family round trying to organise a holiday etc, we have a bloody great monitor we can all see...

In Sky's defense the new 1TB box is first one actually made by Sky internally, all previous boxes have been outsourced to other companies, and due to the crapness and complains they are bringing box builds in-house, if they actually improve or not is another matter  :-/

I doubt their will be a huge improvement in quality - sky have learned a lot from the big yankie firms:

a product doesn't have to be good, just good enough

Yep. Take my standard Grundig SD set top box.

Power consumption when on: 20 watts
Power consumption standby:  20 watts

Hate to think what an HD / Sky + box is like.

.. and they've now added a timeout so that it goes into standby if you forget and leave it on. Why, exactly? ;D

It's a good job Murdoch controls the media because if the nut munchers found out about it... ;D

Don't know, knowing them sub contracted, to sub contractors, who sub contract it  ::)

Design of the box this time is Sky's own, and 'apparently' its very different to the previous HD boxes

If it needs to wake up on timer record then they have to use chips with power-saving circuitry as you will doubtless know.  Plenty of options around but it requires a re-design of the hardware from the ground up.

Simplest option would be a battery-backed chip that can switch on the PSU to wake up the rest of the machine.  That has been available for more than a two decades I would guess, but the will to do it is only just appearing.

Funnily enough, mobile devices have been doing it with avid eagerness for yonks now.  Perhaps it's pursuit of the bottom-line (for the manufacturers, not the user) that drives this?
