Not much done yet. Still overheating or overpressurising.
Current thinking is that it may be overheating, and dash gauge is wrong. So I've sent tunnie down scrappy to find a coolant sensor so I can Tech2 the ECU to get coolant temp.
While he is down the scrappy, I've been fixing odds and ends inside the car. Had to put in another climate unit, as the drivers side display was fubar. Fixed up some other stuff around that area as will.
Flushed the coolant through yet again, its all coming out very clean now.
Changed the backbox on the Rover as well, as thats being MOT'd on Tuesday.

Flushed a number of times, and its supposed to be self bleeding, so don't think its airlock.
Stat replaced, old one had been drilled.
And it seems the coolant sensor is not the fault with the coolant sensor >:(, must be somthing in the loom >:(. Or ECU >:(

And the intercooler fan is seized. And the idiot who designed the cover is a ******* ****** >:( >:( >:(
And one of the bolts holding the front plastic cover to the intercooler is seized.
Bloody tractors >:(

what did you say the temp sensor was reading again? -40 or something silly?!?!!?!!
You might be right on the over fueling with that.... so if its constantly giving it more fuel would account for overheating. Plus the nakered intercooler, and fans not kicking in...
I think it's all still linking back to that sensor.... or the loom leading to that...

It knows that reading is rubbish, so substitutes more sensible values... ...possible fuelling incorrectly, not convinced doing so to overheat though :-/
Intercooler fan isn't there to cool the system ;) (its there to cool turbo'd air, as cold air more dense, so can get more in cylinders, hence more power)

HOhO Got exactly the same faults on the other estate!!! except it doesent blow the water out, just gets hotter and hotter goes up to 98 or so then i chickened out! bridges the leccly fans didnt seem to help, found out the first speed onn the fans comes in at 95, second speed full power isnst designed to come on till about the 100? cant be right surely? anyway started to look outside the box so to sspeak and lo and behold think i have found it but!! wont know till tomorrow when i fit the needed part and try it!! however if its the same fault on yours mate its a bastard to find!!!

HOhO Got exactly the same faults on the other estate!!! except it doesent blow the water out, just gets hotter and hotter goes up to 98 or so then i chickened out! bridges the leccly fans didnt seem to help, found out the first speed onn the fans comes in at 95, second speed full power isnst designed to come on till about the 100? cant be right surely? anyway started to look outside the box so to sspeak and lo and behold think i have found it but!! wont know till tomorrow when i fit the needed part and try it!! however if its the same fault on yours mate its a bastard to find!!!

Tell you what was a bastard of job, getting that engine temp sensor!!.... managed to do it again on TB's JCB without removing the intake manifold!

Will I need 'Tunnie' to crawl around inside my engine bay? Esp as the bastard dealer let us down on those gaskets (kept on back order, as going to be needing in future anyway) >:(

nope!!! its on the front of the engine and apparently is a well known fault on the Bmw td!!! have to say i hadnt come across it before but it makes sense!!!
and when i finally got it apart it was exactly as described!!!
dont get your hopes up tho it may not fix it!!! but i hope it does!!!

Regarding fan temperatures the coolant in an engine has a higher boiling point than normal due to the pressure it is under and the antifreeze, which raises the boiling point. It's not unusual for fan switches to be over boiling point. Generally the system needs to reach 110-120 deg c before it'll boil over IME.
Also, thinking about coolant temperature sensors I'm not sure what tractors do during warm up. They don't have throttles, and ingest air at the maximum rate under all load conditions, so the mixture is inherently variable. Put more fuel in and it just runs faster. The coolant temperature sensor probably just controls the duration of the glow plug warm-up, unless the air intake has a choke valve to allow it to enrich the mixture?

Yes, viscous fan, and certainly appears to howl a bit (that distinctive viscous noise) when pulling away. Whether its still howls when hot is not yet determined....
Omegatoy has come up with a theory, which all seems to fit in with the symptoms, including some of the hassles AA and I had when we changed the waterpump. Hopefully, soon, we will be able to test this theory, but I am quietly confident ;)
