Title: Politics is not left wing - right wing
Post by: Martin_1962 on 22 March 2010, 21:37:06
http://www.politicalcompass.org/

I took the test and I am centre right wing libertarian.

Now this is interesting as it shows that libertarian/authitarian is totally different to left wing/right wing economic policies.

This is good reading and clarifies the positions of a few fringe groups.

In the UK I would be similar to both LD and the more liberal Cons. In the US the Democrats.

What is odd is the way Labour have gone more authitarian and Conservative less authitarian recently - however the name conservative means they should be libertarians.

I gave up on it on Page 4. For me it is far too black-and-white on important issues, when life is 256 shades of grey. In other words, you are basically forced into an agree/disagree answer when, in reality, the majority of questions would require knowledge of specific circumstances which, individually, could make your decision swing between agree and disagree.

That's why I distrust surveys like this.

The question that I gave up on?

"The businessperson and the manufacturer are more important than the writer and the artist."

The rightful (in my view) answer should be one of complete neutrality as society cannot function to its best without both. But you have to agree/disagree. I couldn't, and that's why I abandoned it.

I've just had a go and it gave me these results

Economic Left/Right: -0.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.92

So that was a waste of time then as it does not represent my opinion

The point I wanted to make is that there is more than L & R and I knew some of the questions were not good. but it does make interesting reading

I'm as far left as Ghandi but more libertarian, but Nickbats right in one sense that some questions didn't necessarily lead to black and white answers but just imagine a gun to your head -

"The businessperson and the manufacturer are more important than the writer and the artist."

would you rather a world without business and manufacture or a world without art and literature - i know what i'd rather be without, i think the point is to force you to make a choice. interesting test, but i kinda know what i am - well most of the time anyway - no one, if they're honest 100% agrees with one set of political values - everything in life's a compromise  :y

Well, strangely I am left as the Dalai Lama and slightly towards a libertarian.

Now I am a supporter of Margaret Thatcher, but I have great respect for a few left wing politicians like Frank Field, a man who has proved himself to be honest and tell the truth.

Well I've ended up with:

Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: -0.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.67

Strange as normally I come out as being well right of centre, even right of Attila the Hun! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) ;) ;)
