I'm not surprised they "don't want to talk about this."

That is Bloody Disgraceful!!! If I was her I'd be going to see the Citizens Advice Bureau ASAP!!! >:(

Shocking, a reflection of the UK in 2010 and a cowardly way of dismissing someone.

First thing I thought of as well, however I don't think she qualifies for much as she was there less than a year. The best thing is to get in touch with the local rag and see if they want to kick up a stink. If they can do that then their local customers reading it would hopefully result in a kick in the nuts.
Alas I can see this happening more. I am told I'm odd as none of my work colleagues are "friends" on my account. I work with them.... doesn't mean I consider them friends :-/

Welcome to Britain 2010 ......
After reading this debacle, any decent customer should take their business elsewhere. Boycott the place, and hit the owner hard in the pocket's the most effective course of action here IMHO.
I'd seriously question the legality of deducting the tenner from her wages too.
The girl was honest enough to admit her mistake after all.

it was only a matter of time before this happened. Cowards way to dismiss someone. id be launching the uniform right at the manager >:(
-
it it not illegal to sack someone like that or even over the phone?

It would seem that its not illegal to treat people like this; but it is just plain wrong and tells us far-more about the perpetrator than they would (surely) wish. ::)
Nasty, cowardly and very '2010'.......what a 'sad' society we have wrought! :'(

That is totally unprofessional, unethical and illegal.
If a member of staff makes a mistake (like loose £10) they should at least be interviewed after an investigation, and if necessary be issued with a warning. However this seems like a genuine mistake, which with good management should have been treated as just that. In no respect is it gross misconduct that would warrant instant dismissal, and in any case cannot be classes as such due to legally demanded disciplinary procedures obviously not being adhered to.
All communication in respect of a case like this should have been dealt with by a face to face interview, and if required a letter noting the employee's misdemeanor.
The company must have by law issues her with a contract which should itemise the company's disciplinary procedure. On all occasions this must be followed, with failure to do so being classed as unlawful.
This young lady was also entitled to payment in lieu of notice and holiday pay. As her 'instant' dismissal was not legal then she is entitled to these payments.
Inspite of only working for this company for 8 months, she does has legal rights and I would recommend she speaks to a solicitor immediately claiming WRONGFUL and therefore also UNFAIR dismissal. ;) ;)

Out of order to publically do this especially when face book has a PM servive.
Hope the girl gets plenty of job offers over this and her boss gets plenty of hate mail.

As this is in the "public domain", and not a request for help from within the forum, I expect she is getting a great deal of good advice .. and the company involved may well be also getting advice .. both on legal matters and how to improve it's image .. :)
-
Would they have sacked the woman who sacked the girl if the till was down one day. I dont think so...... and losing a tenner is not a scakable offence in my book, stealing is though.
and a cookie bar sending a girl for biscuits......eh!! something doesnt actually add up to me,

I would hope so Entwood.
As previously working as a senior manager for a plc, I lost track how many individuals I personally dismissed. But everyone was through due legal process of the company's disciplinary procedures, with not one of numerous appeals by employees to the tribunal service ever succeeding. However to not follow procedures and adhere to the rights of the employee could prove very expensive. This company may, hopefully, learn that lesson! 8-) 8-)

But this must still be investigated Skruntie and the company's disciplinary procedure fully adhered to as I have described in my previous post. This dismissal would appear to be WRONGFUL dismissal, and ultimately UNFAIR, for which all employees are protected from no matter how long they have worked for the employer. ;) ;)
Whether or not theft was involved, we cannot say without having all the known facts at our disposal, but this has become a secondary matter as the employer has, apparently, not followed legal pathways. ;) ;)

No XP, as I previously explained it would have to be wrongful dismissal, then ultimately unfair dismissal, as the young lady had worked for the company for less than one year ;) ;)
