Title: Bloody hell, getting older really sucks!!
Post by: bob.dent on 26 March 2010, 10:53:43
Haven't been to see a doctor for a very long time (haven't needed to) until a few weeks ago whereby I needed to get prostate problem checked out. Anyway, over the last couple of weeks my doctor's also started giving me a good overhaul healthcheck and it turns out I've also got high blood pressure (used to be perfect a couple of years ago) and high cholesterol! :'( So now on drugs for enlarged prostate and drugs to reduce cholesterol and hopefully bring blood pressure down. Also been told to try and quit smoking which I'm now trying to do, but after 40 years it ain't easy! :(

A lot of us (Men) dont think we need to get a visit into the doctor as we dint suffer from anything when we were younger.  Sadly things get the better of us as we get older.

The smoking (Stopping) will get easir, my little bro has been smoking from the age of 12 (so he addmitted) till he was 40, he turned 42 in feb and is feeling a lot better for it and a lot richer (he pays the savings off on the mortgage) and said it was the best thing he has done.

I also have a friend that gave up 5 weeks and she addmitted it was vloody hard at 1st, now she comes into my place full of the the joys of spring all the time.

It may be hard Bob. but stick with it matey, bite the bullet and you will reap the benefits in no time.   :y :y

Thanks for the ecouragement Skruntie :y
I guess we all think our body's are bullet proof until things start going wrong. Anyway, determined to quit the weed and start getting more exercise and generally lead a more healthy life style. Refuse to knock beer on the head though 'cos I've got to have a few things I enjoy! ::)

On my last visit I was told I had high cholesterol and needed statins, although 5.5 didn't seem that high to me.
I then read in the news that GPs had been given targets to meet with regards to statins, so I chucked them and started using cholesterol reducing milk and margerine instead.

A smoke free Newent barbie is going to be a bit of a struggle going on last year's efforts... ::)

Seriously though, I hope everything turns out OK. better to find a few trouble codes and resolve them before a rod goes through the side of the block. :y

Wifey is nearly 8 :o
She won't take statins, she's like her mum and prefers a natural remedy so i'm being careful and sleeping with one eye open as she says its me that causes all her stress ::)

Look on any lifestyle changes as a challenge mate. Stopping smoking was the best thing I ever did (nearly 20 years ago) as I reckon the extra fitness helped save my life when it really mattered! I only had a slight cough & a bit of difficulty swallowing chocolate, meat etc, but felt fine otherwise, turned out I had throat cancer, a thumping great tumour the size of a big mans fist that had been quietly growing for a long time with no symptoms! Men usually put up with things & leave it until until it becomes a real concern, but I go to the quacks for every little thing now, he doesn't mind, says he enjoys the banter lol  ::)
I hope your ailments resolve themselves ok. Keep taking the tablets  ;D ;D ;D ;D

You have to be REALLY careful with the prostrate decision and your GP should explain very clearly that any tests indeed may show prostrate issues BUT the time for the prostrate to develop to a threatening level maybe a a very long time and may not be an issue before you die a natural death.

I was a little reluctant to post this on a non medical forum but there are many psychological issues to be associated with any decision as to how to proceed with the prostrate testing and the outcomes thereof.

My neighbour is suffering more with the aftermath of prostrate treatment than anything else - he was fine before.

Please ensure you get the full info from GP before you decide on how to deal with this. Bottom line is - yes it may be detected but it may not get to a level to damage your health for a long long time.

If you are getting on a bit and have no symptoms just be careful.

Get a second opinion and do some internet research on the drugs prescribed to reduce cholesterol.
I am only saying this as the doc told me to attempt dietary change and exercise(still got a 4 year old box of unopened porridge and some old `as new` trainers) as a way of reducing cholesterol stating if he prescribed drugs to do it i would need them for the rest of my life.

Thanks for the concern and advice. :y However, I have every confidence in the doctor I'm under at the moment and she has fully explained the potential pitfalls associated with prostate problems and associated tests as well as giving me lots of fact sheets to read. I've also trawled through a few medical sites and read up on the subject. At the moment I'm having blood tests for potentially high cancer causing PSA levels which was fairly high on the first test. She has aslo examined the prostate (the old finger in the bum test ::)) and found it to be slightly enlarged. Next step is an ultrasound scan on the urinary tract and another blood test. In the meantime she's put me on tablets that help relieve the symptoms which are definitely helping. :y The next stage after that (if there are major concerns) would be a prostate biopsy and this is where things can get a bit nasty as the procedure has its own dangers.
Blimey, this IS becoming a bit of a medical thread! ::)

My first cholesterol test was a couple of years ago and like you, I was told to try diet change and excercise etc. to try and lower it before resorting to drugs (Statins). I managed to get it down from over 6.3 to 5.8 but they're not happy with that as my blood pressure is also high. So I am now being prescribed Statins, but not necessarily for the rest of my life. If I can change my diet and life style sufficiently to bring the cholesterol down I should be able to come off them. :-/

Better to live a long time in good health than in bad.....

Spring`s the perfect time to fix a few little health 'snags', Bob.; as well as the meds., get some sunshine, fresh air and some good walks and it`ll surely help with the B.P and general wellness. ;)
Don`t fret about the cholesterol: BBQ chicken and fresh-salad tossed in olive oil, are considered very healthy. ::)

My Sister recently gave up her 20 a`day habit of 40 years....since then, she`s never looked (and felt) so healthy! :y

Do you think I'll get away with that at the Newent OOF meet Debs? ::) ;D

As far as the smoking goes I'm giving it my best shot - down from 15-20 a day to 7 a day after 2 days at the moment.

Did the doc take your blood pressure before or after you had the "finger" treatment ? I dont think you would get a true reading if it was just after. ::) :D ;D

I had it about 10 years ago from a male doctor, I remember thinking "if I enjoy this Im going to top myself". :o :D ;D ;D.........seem to remember it was a bit enlarged - havent been back since. ::)

I always ask for a male doctor when I go for a delicate examination, but it seems a female is quite acceptable. I shall ask for big bertha next time. ;D

I've recently had a thorough "seeing to" for my hernia op which is healing well, ecg, blood test, the works & i'm healthier than i deserve to be. Not a big fruit fan as i don't have a sweet tooth but love my veggies, brown bread, fish, skimmed milk, sleep with windows open & truck window open all day (fresh air goes a long way) & have taken up cycling again, really enjoying it. I still smoke & drink & always will, but i've given up alot of drug habits from the past. I have reached the stage where i have to visit the bathroom at night but that's just an age thing....i am nearly 24!!! I also drink plenty of water.
By all means Bob do what you have to do but a little of what you fancy does you good. The biggest killer is stress. I'm totally devoid of it because i allow myself the odd indulgence. :y

As it happens, my doctor is a rather attractive, well endowed female in her mid 30's and has a tendancy to wear quite revealing tops (I'm really not joking) - no wonder my bloody blood pressure's high. ::) ;D

really hard to give up with a pint of beer, i found dry roasted peenuts take the urge away...mmmm. ;)  (not sure if they add to cholestrol)

all the best Bob, would try to drop the collesterol without statins if possible personally, dont like the sound of those from other family members.

I don't think the peanuts are too bad for you but the salt content is high which is not so good.
I am on Statins but I don't know how long for. :-/ She might take me off them if my cholesterol and blood pressure drop significantly. Going to start exercising a bit more - swimming, a few long walks and bit of jogging as that should help.
