I can't see that happening. Too many folk, esp elderly, would go mental at the thought of binning perfectly good radios.
-
...only just got a wireless then? ;) :)
-
20 million car radios no longer working. ;D ;D ;D ok if you listen to cd, mp3 or even tapes. but your in trouble if you want to listen to the news.
-
oh thats just charming, so what am i to do with my crystal set with cats whisker? :'(

I've got DAB at home but what i miss is being able to tune into a station manually albeit on a weak signal. Can't do that nowadays it's all pre select/search, no leeway. ::)

I found a 8 track in a skip at work with 5 casettes the other day. :o ;D ;D
I can't see this happening its more like Brussels sticking there nose's in where it's not wanted.

It is going to happen, if for no other reason than there simply isn't enough space left to cram any more channels in to the analogue system.

So why not run the 2 side by side for a few years, untill all new cars are equiped to cope and older cars and people have had a good run with what they have got.
Sadly I am one that wasn't aware of it. which means my huge yamaha RDS Reciever is to become a waste of space and my CCRT700 will cost a small fortune to replace for similar equipment. :-/

They have!!
But remember everywhere was still selling analogue (only) TVs this time last year? The UK population are too stupid, and the suppliers happily exploit that fact.

DAB is an abortion.....
The "sales" chat of "digital quality" is BS ,
it COULD have been CD quality.... but instead, the Government smelled a money making opportunity, and allocated insufficient bandwidth per channel to fit the required bit stream in to.... so they could sell licenses for more channels... and make VAT on the sales of replacement units , as well as other associated tax streams....
so, band limited means fewer bits , fewer bits means lower quality.
by any measurable standard, DAB broadcast quality is inferior to decent FM.
then there's the environmental consequences.
it is estimated that there are some 120-150 million analogue radios in the uk that will go to the scrap yard.
and DAB uses significantly more power than analogue radio...
great, we get to buy new , more expensive, inferior receivers, and the government make loads of money... and someone has to find landfill space for the accumulated radio populae of the last 40 or so years....
i've seen elsewhere that some people are waving fingers at the BBC, like it's THEIR FAULT....
it isn't, they're every bit as unhappy as the rest of us.
and then there's the people with cars that have non standard Radio fittings, Like facelift miggy owners, and features we all love and rely on, like the information display links, the steering wheel controls , and such like....
the best we can do, is to buy a separate unit, and feed it in via a cassette or external input interface.... and mount a remote control for it somewhere handy....
and we'll lose all the other useful things, like the rds linked clock for example...
basically it's a bloody liberty, or rather it's an imposition on our liberty!
and SOLELY in the name of making money by the back door for the government.

ive seen a few cars with dab on the dashboard lately, didnt know what they were till i asked someone. 5 years notice is long enough to go completley digital. gives you time to save for a new one.
