I am trying to format my hard drive and re-install Windows Vista on my Dell Laptop, I have the recovery disc, and there is a partition on the computer called RECOVERY. I went in there and chose tools and opened a window warninng me that this will restore to factory setting, I checked the box as instructed and clicked next, I then get the following message......
Access to \Tools\dp.sc was denied.
Any Ideas folks.

Is it something to do with administrator settings?
I haven't done this with Vista, but I assume you don't have the actual OS disc?

Not sure if this helps, but I'll keep checking about the recovery disc......

Another thought - are you starting the PC with the recovery disc in the drive? You may have to adjust settings to ensure initial boot is done from CD, though should be okay as it is.

And another one .....!
If you only have the recovery disc, I'm not sure you will be able to reinstall the OS. Is it not simply to restart the system following a fault? Why do you need to do the reinstall?

Put the recovery disc in the computer, then restart it and the recovery process will begin (assuming the PC is set to boot from the optical drive first).
If it doesn't boot from the recovery disc, go in to the BIOS and change the boot order so the optical drive is first in line.

On many systems you don't need to do this .. just press F8 while the BIOS screen is up (it often says "press del to enter setup" at the bottom ...) this may give you the "boot menu" and you can just select CD at that point .. saves having to set and reset it later ..
HTH :)

The actual hotkey for bringing up the boot menu varies depending on the manufacturer, but why bother with resetting it afterwards?
