Title: Lancaster Insurance
Post by: Squealey on 27 March 2010, 14:49:41
Bit pee'd off today I must admit.

My wife got a lift to Hemel yesterday to pick up our new (to us) Polo 1.9SDi. It was a gift from my brothers boss who no longer wanted it and knew the financial difficulty weve been having lately. So, in return for doing a LOT of driving over a four day period he gave me the car (plus a bit of cash :y)

I was happy as a pig in poo. My brother asked if his soon to be ex wife could borrow it as she had just crashed her car, not a problem.

Arranged with my bruv that Zoe (swmbo) would pick it up on Friday. He said great and he'd leave it insured till the end of the weekend so she could get it home and sort her insurance out. (I literally haven't stopped since Wednesday a week ago)

Got a text from bruv at 11am yesterday saying he had forgot to keep the insurance running so Zoe would have to get it sorted. Zoe was already on her way to Hemel. I started my new job yesterday so couldn't help at all. So Zoe did what we would all do, rang her insurance company and asked them to transfer the insurance from her current Audi to the Polo. This is what happened,

Lancaster: Sorry you cant change the car on your current policy, you will have to start a whole new policy with us.
Zoe: Eh, I was able to swap it with More Than, why not you?
Lan: We just dont do that.
Zoe: Ok, well what info do you need.
Lan: We need the exact make, model etc of the car.
Zoe:I dont know that, im not really into cars, but I do have the registration plate.
Lan: (very snottily) We cannot use that, we are NOT connected to the DVLA.

So Zoe had to text me, wait for an answer then ring them back. She gave them all the details. The renewal price was £390 :o :o :o :o :o :o

Now she doesnt deal with the cars normally so just accepted what the woman told her, (in all fairness she was on the motorway in a noisy car with the in laws sat nav blasting out at full volume)

I honestly feel that Lancaster have really pulled our pants down here. She has been driving nearly 20 years, never had a crash, never been done for speeding and has maximum NCB, and they want her to pay getting on for £400 for a Polo with less than 70bhp.

I know at the end of the day it is our perogative to shop around and choose whats best for us, but you would expect a company who you have been loyal to too at least be competitive wouldnt you?

I feel that they just preyed on the fact she was obviously a bit desperate to get it insured there and then.

By the way, did a confused and 14 companies came in at under £210. Too bloody late now though >:(

What I dont get is she had a 90bhp Audi 80 Estate before which wasn't worth much and cost her £190 a year. I admit the Polo is worth probably £1500 more but I thought once under £2000 then the value was pretty much irrelevant to the quote anyway.

How can a 64bhp Polo be double the insurance. Even my 130bhp ;) Omega is only £250 a year, and my records nowhere near as good as Zoes :o

No it's not... Policy was "Distance Sold" and you therefore have a 14 Day Cooling off period ;) ;)

Cancel it... They are entitled to charge for the cover provided (and possibly an admin fee) though... If they refuse, Ombudsman all the way :y :y

Yeah, cancel it. Even if you have an admin fee, what you save over a year will more than cancel that out. Don't give the idiots your custom  :y

I wouldn't be too sure about that. I cancelled a policy with a two-bit ins company, the cost of the cover was £250 and they charged me £120 admin fee.

But he's within the Statutory Cooling Period so the insurance ombudsman will have something to say about an extortionate charge :y

I agree, I think, but they don't half take their time, and another policy would have to be purchased in the mean time. I would just be annoyed, spread the word on forums such as this and find a new company next year.

Sorry you're having trouble, I agree with others 14 day cooling off period so use it :y

Must ask why didn't you stick with Morethan?
I'm pleased with them so far.
I recently changed from an 1.4 Astra, value £650 to an Omega value £2300 for £24 increase on the policy.
The Astra policy was originally only £124.

I am no longer a loyal customer of any company, we have 4 cars and I chop and change depending on the quotes, it's so easy nowadays with the tinternet, Confused.Com for me every time...... :y

I've also done the rounds with online comparison sites.
Been with local broker, Directline, Post Office, Aviva, Royal Sun Aliance, just in the last five years.
Renewed with Morethan last year, because they were still the best price out of most out there.
Remains to be seen if they come up with a good deal this time around, car renewal due in May. I also have home insurance with them, threaten to move the lot elsewhere if they fail to give me a good deal, worked last year :y

Pretty much the same answer as Vamps, I chop and change to the cheapest quote. My wifes Audi was less than £200 a year with Lancaster but More Than were quoting £330 to renew with them.

Theres no mileage in being loyal these days, computers dont see loyalty, they just see numbers on a sheet and trained monkeys read out those numbers ;D ;D

Why is that then?, they ask what it's worth.

I usually give them a price what I paid, at least.
Then it's up to them what they think it's worth.
You either agree or disagree with that figure, and take it from there, come claim time :y

Just a quick update, sorry haven't been able (allowed) to get to a computer for the last few days.

Swmbo rang Lancaster on Monday morning and spoke to an initialy very nice lady. She explained that she gave the wrong details (she thought it was a 1.4TDi) and could she get a quote for the 1.9 instead, honestly expecting  it to be less (much lower bhp on the 1.9). Lady came back and said it would be £40 MORE :o :o :o but not to worry as the paperwork hadn't been sent out so at least she wouldnt get charged for that. Jeeez, thanks for that.

My wife then said no, we can get the same for £200 so i'll cancel the policy. The womans attitude changed completely. 'You do realise we will charge a £30 admin fee if you cancel and charge you for the 2 days you were insured', thats fine Zoe said, she had already paid an £80 deposit! Then, she informed Zoe that if the paperwork has been sent out she would HAVE to be charged a lot more. Zoe took great delight in telling her she had already said the paperwork hadnt been sent out.

So, thats cancelled, new policy in place for £207 and Lancaster are well and truely never going to recieve another penny from me or anyone in my family. What a shower of s**ts!!!!!

Well done. Had few run-ins with Norwich Union over the years and got Ombudsman involved - just need to persevere on these things and keep calm

when they cancelled your initial policy to give you a new one on the Polo, didn't they offer you a refund for the original policy (if you paid up front)? would have to be a full refund with no cancellation fee too as they're cancelling the policy, not you.

the whole "we need to set up a new policy" sounds like a scam for the person on the phone to rack up a sale on a new policy - i'll bet the ombudsman would be very very interested in this - give them a call m8  :y

in fact if you follow lancasters logic, if you start a policy with no NCD, change car every 11 months or so (i wish) you could be with them 20 yrs and never build up any NCD as they keep giving you a new policy! - whole thing stinks imo

I use Lancaster to insure my classic cars, 1961 Ford Consul :- £101 fully comp with 3 hgv points declared. £17 charge to change cars. I insure the Beastie with Budget as Lancaster wanted more...It is a minefield & i agree with not staying with any given company for too long. ::)
