Title: Molex Power Connector
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 01 April 2010, 18:12:43
4 pin power connector from a PC PSU.

Am I right in thinking pins 1 +2  (yellow = Pin1) are 12V (+) and ground

Need to power a camera up and power to the camera is via 2 connectoers rather than a plug/socket setup.

TIA  :y

stick a meter on it, but std is 12v=y, 0v=bk, 5v=r

Bear in mind that many PC power supplies do not behave themselves unless they've got a substantial load on them, on the primary outputs, which will probably be +5 and +3.3. As said, put a meter on it and make sure. :y

As Kevin has already said, every single computer PSU (which are all switched mode) I have come across expects to see a certain load before it will function correctly (eg, truly stabalised voltage, etc) - I'd be very surprised if a camera got anywhere near placing enough load on a computer PSU to guarantee it will be stable (or even start up).

If you are a dab hand with a soldering iron, I'll quite happily post up a schematic for a power supply you can build yourself for pennies.

That'll do it for sure, a hard drive pulls around 5W at idle (so you know the supply will definately start up), and I doubt a camera will max that supply out in the current stakes (the supply is rated to 2A on both the +12 and the +5 rails).

Even if I didnt use it for the camera it has plenty of other uses and not a bad price.

camera req 12v/1A

Plenty of room to spare in the loading stakes, perfect for what you want.

just FYI a common trick is to connect + to 12v rail and - to 5 v rail to give yourself 7volts (as long as you have enough other load on the 5v rail to take the excess) ;)
