Most sad, and ironically I think they would've been safer if it had exploded while still fitted to the car.

I've seen the damage an exploding car tyre can do, but I've never heard of one doing it "off the car" ... I suppose the clue is in the fact it was changed due to a "bulge" .. ie weakness or damage .. and I'm guessing they didn't deflate it ... (hindsight being wonderful :( ) ... and possibly the heat from being in the car caused the pressure to rise enough to .......   :(

Very very sad .. :(

when i was in the trade we had a tyre pumped up with a bulge in the wall it had been kerbed and as we sat there eatin our din dins we could here this ping ping noise then bang as it finally gave in..all the cords were pinging then bang the rubber gave up luckily nobody around we were in the office but i have heard some horror stories about this kind of thing and when someone tells you compressed air is dangerous they are bloody right
